I have two boys in a Boy Scout Troop chartered to a community organization, and I have been following the conversations about allowing homosexuals into Scouting with great interest, especially with regards to the survey. My wife, a registered leader, did receive the survey and told me about it, but I have not seen it directly.
I really think the youth is WAY ahead of the adults on the issue of homosexuality, based on my son's experience. Granted, its a very limited sample, but from what my sons have told me, it sounds like many of their friends are in the same place as they are. My son had an experience during a fundraiser that went something like this:
Man: I don't like the product you are selling, but here is $20 because you keep out homosexuals.
Son: Thank you, but I have friends that are gay.
Man: Then give me back my $20.
My son was willing to give up a huge donation to stand up for his friends, in public.
And just 1/2 an hour ago, I took my sons aside and asked them this question, based on the survey question 'Should an adult leader allow a gay and straight boy to share the same tent':
Would you have a problem with sharing a tent with a boy you knew was gay?
Both of them responded almost identically...That they wouldn't care, as long as they were left alone.
And to be honest, from what I have observed during outings, the boys themselves decide who to bunk with, not the adult leaders. They have the option of bunking down by themselves, or with a buddy. The boys will choose who they want to bunk with, straight or gay, more with the idea of bunking with a friend, rather than along the lines of sexuality.
This is why I think that many of the youth are SO much further along than the adults. It would be really interesting to have a survey sent out to the YOUTH asking them their opinions, apart from their parent's opinions. Not that this will ever happen, or probably even should. But it would be interesting.
