So, there was this local story about a boy getting mauled by Rottweilers.
Except, I know where this happened.  I used to live in that neighborhood, and I’m familiar with that construction lot.

Especially the big “GUARDED BY ATTACK DOGS – NO TRESPASSING” signs.

I’m mystified by the rending of garments and gnashing of teeth.  By the victim’s family, well OK.  He was pretty messed up.  But by the folks that own the lot?  Listen, you put these big, trained attack dogs in there.  What did you expect them to do?

REVERE, Mass. —A teenage boy was in critical condition after being attacked by two Rottweiler's behind the Northgate Shopping Mall in Revere Thursday night, police said.

Police officers said they found Brandon Marchetti, 14, in a secured, fenced-in area of a construction yard being mauled by the two dogs.

Marchetti's friend, a 12-year-old boy, had called police, who fired at the dogs when they arrived.

The brother of the construction yard owner said it is believed the boys climbed a sand pile to get over the fence and into the yard.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

or at least that is what I keep hearing.  Rotweilers have to be trained to be that vicious.  Sorry for the boy and the family and for the kid who had to watch that.  But what were they doing trespassing?

the No Trespassing sign says "Don't worry about the dog, beware of owner".
A Secured Lot with a fence and signage? Sorry, but chalk that up to a lesson learned (or not).

  •  blaming the dogs is not helping (4+ / 0-)

the boys should have obeyed the signs.

The signs are there for a reason.

I'm bothered by the heartlessness of some of the comments, which focus on blaming the kids, rather than on compassion for the critically-injured kid and his family. I expect that from anonymous right-wingers on sensationalist sites like Liveleak. But on DailyKos??? These are 12-14 yo kids. They make mistakes. One had his scalp ripped open and was fighting for his life. How about a little empathy?

Marchetti's parents said the boys frequently came to the area to play with the dogs and had permission to do so.

Is it really necessary that we choose a side and assign fault?  When did the concept of accident lose all meaning?

Can't we just acknowledge that a horrific tragedy occurred, that maybe there is no one who can be held responsible,  and that all we can do is our best to help everyone recover?

  •  These boys are old enough to know better and (0+ / 0-)

presumably are at least literate enough to read the sign.

It is also highly likely that there had been previous acts that had caused the property owners to spend the money to get trained guard dogs.

I am sorry the boy got hurt, but stupid can be very painful.
