More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

Top Republican Warns Of French People Illegally Crossing Mexican Border In South Texas

During an appearance on a local radio station Thursday morning, Texas Senator John Cornyn (R) claimed that people from all over the world are now entering the country illegally through Texas and insisted that any Congressional effort to reform the immigration system must invest in border security.

“You gotta stop the flow of people coming across and my friends and your friends Edd who have places in South Texas tell me, as a matter a fact a guy told me last night, he said we’ve got people coming across our place speaking Chinese, French and basically all of the languages in the world, coming through and across our southern border,” Cornyn said during an interview on KSEV.

While lawmakers agree that border security should be part of any comprehensive immigration reform package, the U.S. border is more secure than ever before. Border crossings are at 40-year low — falling to their lowest level since the Nixon administration — and net undocumented migration is at or below zero. Border agents patrol every single mile of the border every day and the vast majority of the border already meets one of Homeland Security’s highest standards of security.

I have started going to meetings of Organizing for Action at a house in Bellaire TX.
I had an opportunity to introduce myself and present my viewpoint. I said I had been a Democrat since about 1967, after a few years as a Young Republican. I said I wanted Democratic Presidents. I said my primary interest was in glbt rights, that I was delighted that President Obama had brought up glbt rights in all his recent addresses.
I also voiced apprehensions about possible cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and that I had seen such apprehension posted on dailykos.
I find the local leaders of this group understand that members will not always agree with the President 24/7.
The main issue we have talked about is gun regulation. I pointed out that my own Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is a co-sponsor of HR 724, the campanion to Sen. Dianne Feinstein's S 150, and I recommended constituents thank her. We are considering ways to draw media attention with visits to Congressional offices.

  •  Adam Lanza NRA Certified(able) (6+ / 0-)

    http://thinkprogress.org/...

What The Newly Released Newtown Massacre Documents Tell Us About Adam Lanza

Thursday morning, local police released previously embargoed police records about the Newtown, Connecticut shooter, Adam Lanza. The records disclosed that, in five minutes, Lanza was able to fire 155 shots, partly as a consequence of the numerous 30 round high-capacity magazines he was carrying.

Most of the released documents were search warrants for Lanza’s car and home, which he shared with his gun-collecting mother (the weapons used at Newtown were taken from his mother’s stockpile). Put together, the findings in these warrants paint a disturbing picture of the arsenal available to Lanza:

     – 1 NRA certificate for Adam Lanza and 1 NRA training book. Police investigators found a National Rifle Association certificate in Adam Lanza’s name, though the nature of the certificate was unspecified. Police also found a book titled “NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting,” a book that’s commonly given out as part of NRA pistol training courses. Graduates of these courses are given certificates.

        – 3 new guns. In addition the newly-identified shotgun in his parked car outside (it was a Saiga 12), a search of the Lanza home found an Enfield Albian bolt action rifle and a Savage Mark II .22 rifle. The latter contained live ammunition.

        – 4 high capacity magazines, 2 of which were brought loaded to the crime scene. There were two high-capacity shotgun shell magazines for his shotgun at the crime scene, containing a combined 70 extra rounds for the fortunately-unused shotgun. Police also found two 20-round magazines at the Lanza residence.

        – Over 1700 rounds of ammunition. These covered a variety of different calibers and gun types, and would have stocked 170 standard 10-round magazines or 56 of the 30-round high capacity magazines Lanza used to such deadly effect in the school.

        – 13 types of bladed weapons. The Lanzas didn’t just collect guns; they also had a variety of knives, samurai swords, and one “six foot ten inch wood handled two sided pole with a blade on one side and a spear on the other.”

  •  Funny how deficit spending on wars (0+ / 0-)

gets calculated out to the full costs for 50 years into the future.

But when it's high speed rail project or something similar, the costs are minimized and you always hear someone saying "Well.. interest rates are so low, it's an investment!"

My point is this:  It doesn't matter whether it is a war or bailing out state employees or a wind project.  When spending borrowed money, the costs go up very high as they are extended out into the future.  We continue to rack up debt, and never pay off the principal.  We will struggle paying off even the interest on all this borrowing.

      •  I realize there is a moral difference (0+ / 0-)

        in the initial spending.

That's not what I am talking about.  I am talking about the long-term suffering of our economy brought on by debt.

It doesn't really matter what the initial cost was for.  it is the opportunity cost for 50 years paying off that original debt.  But as we pay $300 Billion per year in interest alone, that $300 Billion is not being spent on needed services- services our children will do without because their taxes are paying for our

I'm just saying, I never see anyone calculate out the 50 year costs of a project that is progressive-friendly.

one of my Facebook friends predicted, after reading through the transcript, that DOMA would be struck down in a 5-4 decision, with Ginsburg, Kagan, Breyer, Thomas, and Scalia voting to strike it down, and Sotomayor, Roberts, Kennedy, and Alito voting to uphold it.

He then revised it to say that Kennedy would vote to strike down and Scalia would vote to uphold.

...I cannot possibly imagine any case before the Supreme Court where Sotomayor would take the conservative stance AND Scalia and/or Thomas would take the liberal stance.
