To all Kossacks:  Please take note that these Congressional District Information Diaries are not meant to evaluate whether or not the districts are beatable.  They are meant for Kossacks and others to share information on any knowledge they have on the districts.

There have been recent Congressional District Information diaries where Kos user comments are talking about "how this person will never be beaten," or "even a scandal wouldn't change anyone's minds."  To be frank, we're not looking for this kind of feedback.  We want real, inside information about the Congressional Districts we cover in our diaries.

We'd like to reach out to any of you Kossacks from Maryland's 1st Congressional District for information.  Feel free to add your understanding of the communities, issues, etc.

This isn't going to be much of a diary.  You can add anything you want about Maryland's 1st Congressional District.  Keep in mind this diary is just for information purposes.  Let's not get too carried away with whether or not any of these Knowledge Democrats information gathering diaries mean the Congressional districts in questions are winnable by Democrats or not.  Were here to assess districts across the country, no matter how "deep reed" or "red" or Republican-occupied they are.

What issues directly affect people in Maryland's 1st Congressional District?  My colleague Augustin and I are working on the Knowledge Democrats project and I've started working on a wiki page for the 1st congressional district in order to assist in our long term efforts to promote progressive candidates in that district, whether at the local, state or federal level.  We understand this district may in fact have a bit conservative constituency but we're looking to reach out to any Kossacks, Democrats or progressives in the state anyway.  It helps for long-term planning.

We also know that the current representative of the district is Andy Harris.

Also, taking politics out of the equation, let others know if you've been to Maryland's 1st Congressional District and can point out some good restaurants, venues and places to spend time in there.

So far, we only have the basic information.  What issues should be documented? What important links / articles / information should be added to the wiki page?  Has the Congressman/Congresswoman been a good or bad representative?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

but I am not a registered voter there. I live in DC and have a small condo in Ocean City.  I am not informed of the issues there but I am working on a statewide MD race so I'm sure I will know some in the future.
On the more general side there are lots of good seafood places in OC!!  Harrisons Harbor and Phillips all you can eat being two of them.  For great nostalgic drive in atmosphere and great ice cream try Dumser's Dairyland!

under the odious Mr. Harris.  My most recent thought regarding his potential removal of Harris was the possible persuasion of Wayne Gilchrest to switch parties and run against him as a D.  Gilchrest was an R, but he didn't suck; and everyone in MD-01 knows that.

Harris represents everything Gilchrest fights against, most importantly the Chesapeake Bay and the environment in general.  Mr. Gilchrest is presently working for the environment in his own private way, but I shouldn't think he'd need much persuading to know that his presence on Capitol Hill could do much more than his current position.

Harris recently voted against hurricane relief that would have benefited his own constituents.  Everyone in MD knows how important Crisfield is to the MD seafood industry, but Harris said no to that aid.  Asshole.

So I say, draft Wayne Gilchrest as a D candidate.  I could tolerate some blue dog economic attitudes if it would mean the end of Harris.  It would also send a message to the tea partiers in general that their brand of crap is vulnerable to reasonable voices.

Md made the district so republican the issues don't matter. Most people are just republican by birth except the low wage hospitality and poultry workers.
If we ever get hit by a hurricane in Ocean City Harris will be the first guy with his hand out, big hypocrite.

But I can tell you that during desegregation, many working class whites left Baltimore and many moved north, which would put them into part of District 1.

A few years ago, I read that on the eastern shore, its not "Do you go to church?" its "Which Church do you go to?"

    I hope this helps.

Sam's Pizza in St. Michaels is good, as is Rusticana across the street, and Suicide Bridge Inn's Friday night seafood buffet is a do-not-miss .  It's in Hurlock, not too far from Cambridge.

The district was gerrymandered to protect MD's nearby Dem districts.

As it stands now the Balto Burbian conservatives are a majority.

Meanwhile in terms of square miles the Eastern Shore makes up most of the district. The Shore tends rural conservative but was very happy with Gilchrest.

Issues? I can't speak for Howard County and the burbs, but ... On the Shore, jobs, economic development, access to high speed Internet, funding for bay cleanup, an end to the endless bickering over nutrient pollution from farms, support for historic preservation and rehab in the small towns and villages, loss of rural post offices.

Infrastructure, especially upgraded waste water plant funding.

    Generally, Rural America's problems.

MD01's Eastern Shore areas are not as conservative-bagger as it might seem, but the bagsters have taken over the local party committees.

I don't know where the Clown Car Democratic Machine got ahold of Wendy Rosen to run against Andy, but what a national embarrassment.

To see some interview shorts from the last election go to and search on Andy Harris.

Andy, meanwhile, has never really gotten further afield than Johns Hopkins. This makes him, in essence, a 1 percenter in context.

He has been ALEC material for a long time.

And he is a broken record on the "tidal wave of debt."

He says the Chinese will tell us what to do since they own all our debt (in reality it's about 7 percent).

He hasn't had an original idea legislatively in his entire tenure.

He plays on the sense of farmers being saddled with regulations to the ruralites.

He rarely holds any sort of freewheeling discussion with constituents.

Aside from being out for his own career, it's very hard to nail down what his beliefs are, because all you get are talking points.

Someone who can credibly put together cleaning up the Chesapeake and traditional rural progressive ideas could win.

    Thump! Bang. Whack-boing. It's dub!

The 2010 Congressional redistricting in Maryland was a blessing.  Andy Harris' district was relegated to the Eastern Shore and Donna Edwards became my representative.  I finally got a Representative that actually represents my political and moral views.  Harris did not, and the two clip of Harris typify the differences.  Harris is a thoughtless blowhard, dramatically out of touch with normal people.  I'm glad to see him gone from my district, and hope we can make him gone from the House of Representatives next year.  The only regret is that we haven't done it earlier, and now Dr. Harris is ensured a life-long pension from the American taxpayer for doing absolutely nothing constructive during his tenure in the House.

@pipsorcle, thank you for asking about this.

The Knowledge Democrats group, which I'm apart of, is working to assess information from all GOP-held seats in Congress.  Basically, the goal is to target ALL the GOP in every state (including Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi) for re-election.  We'll eventually post information on our diaries for all the phone banks, intros to all the candidates, etc.  We're not leaving any Democratic candidate in any district behind.

And if we make exceptions for three blue dog Democrats just to get Nancy Pelosi back her gavel, we will do it!
