Remember all the electronics from the 1960's?
This past week smileycreek finally broke down and got herself a brand new smart phone for the very first time. It is an Android unit that has the capacity to scramble eggs for your breakfast:
In Nineteen Sixty
I Was But A Naive Youth
Older Naive Now
This is what our only telephone looked like in the 1960's. Recently I saw a teenager in my practice. He told me he'd come across one of these things in a person's home and couldn't begin to figure out how to make a phone call with it (revenge of the old people)
All is possible
That's How It Feels Before Noon
Not So After Six
This made me nostalgic for the days of my youth growing up during the 1960's. In the 1960's I had to play outside. We all played outside. Anything else was cruel and unusual punishment as far as kids were concerned. We played kick-the-can. We played baseball. We even created our own "summer olympics" during summer break. We built tree houses. We jumped off roofs. We hunted around for lizards and snakes and frogs. We caught insects and butterflies and made collections of them. We swam in irrigation canals. And we rode the hell out of our bikes.
The world for a kid in the 1960's was outdoor focused to be sure. The indoor world consisted of reading books primarily and watching some TV. We had a black and white TV with rabbit ears on a cheap stand that you could roll around the room. We didn't get a color TV until the 1970's if you can believe that. I remember watching the men land on the moon on July 16, 1969 on our original black and white TV.
Expiration Dates
On All My Canned and Boxed Foods
Food's Life Has Limits
As we got older and into music we bought vinyl albums and played them on record players.
I owned one of these exact models of portable record players. It was made by General Electric and cost $14.95 when I bought mine at Target. Mine was an off white color without the flames:
Young Green Leaves Outside
Bright, Vibrant Flowers In Bloom
Eyes Not Quite As Sharp
It played these things:
Young Frog Jumps In Lake
Old Hawk Sees The Lake Ripple
Young Frog Old Hawk's Lunch
Remember when all your well-to-do friends had one of these in their homes? We didn't and I must confess I was envious:
First Concert I Saw
Was Headlined By Rolling Stones
Now It's MP3's
We got AM transistor radios that we carried around. Life was so simple then. Every one could easily figure out how to use and control any electronic gadget. My AM pocket transistor radio looked just like this with the dial you had to negotiate to find the station you wanted to listen to.
Three On A Tree Plym
The First Car I Ever Drove
Turbo Subie Now
And in my first car, a well used 1964 Plymouth Beleveder II, the car radio looked just like this with the push button presets for your favorite radio stations. You had to first find the station you wanted, pull out the button...then push it in to set that station to that button. Of course all the knobs could be pulled off easily as well.
Eight Tracks Were The Rage
Back In Early High School Days
It's All iPods Now
I suppose I should have had an idea the world was going to really change rapidly because I was told I was "born in the atomic age." And the very first thing developed as a toy that just blew every kid's socks off was one of these ---> a Wham-O superball. This is the exact first one I had because red is my favorite color. It was the first one I had because I soon bounced it over a house never to be seen again. I think this was the sign of the times to come.
Russia Was Scary
Now North Korea Scares Us
With Their Nuke Missiles
We also had this instead of a new-fangled electric model but I'm keeping this New Day focused on audio-visual electronic devices.
When I Was A Boy
We Could Only Cook With Stoves
Today Microwaves
All Haiku in this diary, no matter how badly written, by p50
So, tell me about your 1960's (or earliest) electronic devices memories.

smileycreek is organizing and asking all Community Quilt recipients to bring their quilts to NN13. We'll assemble at a pre-designated location and time for a group photo with one of the NN13 professional photographers. It will be a group hug celebrating one of the most beloved community building projects we have here at Daily Kos with Sara R and winglion at the center of it. navajo and Glen the Plumber are going to scout out and select a location in advance for all to meet with their quilts for a memorable photo opportunity.
