During the last couple of weeks I've been working 12+ hour days on a couple of projects since like anybody else, I have to work to make a living. As I gave RP a break from organizing the (peaceful) revolution, and re-entered the alternate (Orwellian) reality we live in, through the looking-glass, I realized that the revolution is going to have to be postponed. It will happen, but it's going to take a little longer than I anticipated.
One thing that made me come to that conclusion was watching ten minutes of the ABC show "Splash." I think I could stand watching about ten minutes or so... I watched the segment where Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Louie Anderson dived backwards (from 18 feet of so) into the swimming pool, under the watchful eye of Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who at one point ripped his clothe off revealing a speedo, and went on to regale the audience with a magnificent jump (from 33 feet, I think), along with another guy.
Then as I plunged into work on my projects, working very long hours, and at the end of the day watching a little more TV than usual, including MSNBC (the horrors!), and some of my favorite shows like Justified, Smash, and Games of Thrones, I realized that the situation is almost hopeless... But I'd say "almost" since I'm an eternal optimist and if I didn't believe that people will eventually get smart about not only exactly what's happening, but what to do about it, I would stop trying to help in the process altogether and just concentrate on making money--like anybody else.
There is a very tiny group of powerful individuals connected by a worldview, shared interests, and institutions they've set up (corporate boardrooms, think tanks) who have taken control of the levers of power, including the government, and the mainstream media.
Because of the power they exert, and because of their shared interests, the result is an increasingly fascistic society which continues to devolve into dystopia for the average citizen, although this is happening gradually.
As people continue to fall down the economic ladder, those who fall into poverty and homelessness become invisible, while the rest watches "Splash" or "Smash," of MSNBC, or worst, FoxNews, or worst, ABC, CBS, and NBC, or explore their narcissistic tendencies by posting mindless stuff on facebook or twitter.
The peaceful revolution can't happen unless and until a large-enough segment of the population unites into a cohesive movement capable of acting in a coordinated and strategic manner against the rising fascistic corporatocracy.
It doesn't have to be the majority; in fact, my take is that five to ten percent would be enough. I think it's doable, but it's going to take some time. I'll continue doing my little part in the effort, as I'm sure many others will as well.
So maybe not this summer, but the next one, or the one after that. I just hope people wake up in time...
