Last Friday, Julia Louis-Dreyfus had lunch with Vice President Biden at the White House. She received her invitation so the Vice President could personally congratulate her for her Emmy win on her wildly popular HBO series, Veep.
I came to have lunch with Vice President Joe Biden and I surprised him by sitting at his desk, so he thought he'd just ask my advice on various briefs he had to deal with. I was happy to give him my advice, which he paid no attention to whatsoever.
The
link above takes you to a picture of Louis-Dreyfus sitting at Joe Biden's desk. It's one of my favorite pictures ever to come out of that office and tells me this administration still has a great sense of humor.
Season 2 of Veep airs tonight and I have been peeing my pants for its return. Louis-Dreyfus plays Selina Meyer who, after her own failed bid for the Presidency, is nominated to the Vice Presidency by the man she lost to. Everything from the casting, the writing and the acting works perfectly together to produce one of the funniest shows I've seen come down the pike in some time.
Do not watch if the F-word offends you.
Of course just about everything Julia Louis-Dreyfus has involved herself with has been successful. After getting her start on Saturday Night Live from 1982 to 1985, she went on to lasting fame with her brilliant work as Elaine Benes on Seinfeld. It is easy to get yourself pigeonholed by a single character after working on a successful sitcom. Julia's talent broke the Seinfeld Curse when she appeared in The New Adventures of Old Christine. During her acceptance speech for her Emmy, she held up the award and said, "I'm not somebody who really believes in curses, but curse this, baby!"
Her newest venture in Veep has cemented her in my mind as one of the all time great comedians.
Politically, she is a solid progressive. She actively supported Al Gore's campaign and gave her strong endorsement to both of President Obama's campaigns. This is not to say she hasn't been critical of him when he has gone over to the dark side. Take a watch of this video she did last November taking our President to task over the Keystone Pipeline.
A strong ally for a clean environment, she has involved herself with many environmental issues and organizations. She sits on the Board of Directors for Heal the Bay and was involved in the successful passage of Proposition O, which allocated $500 million to cleaning up pollution in the waterways of Los Angeles.
Having Julia Louis-Dreyfus working on environmental issues is a very good thing. Of course, her celebrity status gives her a platform to be heard, but that isn't all she brings to the table. Her estimated net worth is 3 billion dollars. Yes. You read that right. 3 buh-buh-billion dollars. She would have been a wealthy woman by now in her own right with her successful career, but she was also born into great wealth. Her father, Gérard Louis-Dreyfus, is the great grandson of Léopold Louis-Dreyfus who founded the Louis Dreyfus Group, a French conglomerate involved in shipping, agriculture, oil, energy and other commodities.
It's always nice when a member of the lucky sperm club chooses to use their money for good. If she ever decided to run for political office, I believe she would do great things. Who knows, maybe someday she actually could sit in the Vice President's office. It isn't outside of the realm of possibility (see Franken, Al). Selfishly though, I prefer her right where she is, on my television, keeping me laughing. We need that too.

From BeninSC:
There were (at least) two really fine comments in Laura Clawson's most disturbing diary today about the young girl who committed suicide after rape photos were posted.
This comment from Spider Stumbled made a quality suggestion, and this comment by GreenMother took the idea still further!
From your diarist, Steveningen:
In Denise Oliver Velez's must-read-diary Native schools and stolen generations: U.S. and Canada, peregrine kate really brought the pain home for me with this comment.
