Seeing the people of Boston out in the streets last night cheering and applauding has lifted me and I thought maybe a music diary of Boston songs/bands might be fun!
I will post a bunch of videos that come to my mind but I would love to see/hear what others might want to contribute. It's always fun to discover new music and be reminded of stuff you might have heard but forgot about. So feel free to chime in with your recommendations regardless of genre. All are welcome!
Ok, I'll start with something I posted in a comment last night:
Dropkick Murphys "For Boston". It's short but awesome Celtic punk.
"For Boston"
For Boston, for Boston,
we sing our proud refrain
for Boston, for Boston
'tis wisdom's earthly fane
for here are all one
and our hearts are true
and the towers on the heights
reach the heavens own blue.
for Boston, for Boston
'til the echoes ring again
For Boston, for Boston
thy glory is our own
for Boston, for Boston
'tis here that truth is known
and ever with a right
shall our heirs be found
'til time shall be no more
and thy work is crowned
for Boston, for Boston
thy glory is our own
Ok, now I'll dig into my childhood memories a bit;0
And because you can't listen to Boston without hearing this:
And, of course, this:
Ok, so I must move forward and that brings me to the band that I think really put Boston on the music map. The song I have chosen is because it is the opening song of the concert I saw at the Bangor, ME auditorium in ummmm. . . . '83? maybe '84. OH, wait yeah, it was the fall of '84. I was a freshman and it was the first time I'd gone to a concert on my own! But it was staged perfectly with a rising scrim revealing the band as the opening of the song played.
80's Boston bands:
The Cars
While that was their major hit, I loved this:
Ok, now I'm gonna jump into the 90's.
Anyone remember Letters to Cleo?
I remember spending hours listening to this trying to get the lyrics and timing down, singing along at the top of my lungs in my dorm room;)
While Throwing Muses was actually formed in Providence, RI, they recorded this album in Boston and performed gigs there while getting off the ground.
Oh, and let's not leave out The Pixies! Probably best known for this one which most know from the movie "Fight Club".
I've been pretty emotional all week and music is one of my comforts. Boston has given us a lot of great music, so I lift my glass and give a hearty slainte!
For Boston!!

How could I have missed this! I grew up watching the show and have seen the bar it was loosely based on!
