When you discuss single sex marriage with Conservatives you discover early on that they really don't have a problem with single sexes marrying and living together over a lifetime in a relationship of trust; they just don't like gay sex.

For them, as soon as sodomy laws went off the books, society went to hell...

Not every one is going to enjoy gay sex.  Just like everyone is not going to enjoy heterosexual sex. People are different. People want different things.

But Gay Marriage is not about gay sex.  Just like heterosexual marriage is not all about vaginal sex.  How do we know this? Because before Viagra, heterosexual marriages still lasted till the end of a partner's lifetime, way long after sex was a distant memory.

Marriage has nothing to do with sex. Never has. Never will.  Marriage is about the pursuit of happiness.  It is a) about being wanted, b) about showing your love, and c) about taking care of the one you love after you've passed on.

Conservatives have big misconceptions when it comes to what marriage is... It is not about family.  Large numbers of heterosexual couples do not have children.  It is not about the particular God of their ancestors;  marriage stretches across all religions including no religion.  It is not about sharing lives together till the end;  that doesn't happen very often these days. Divorce does.

And Marriage is not about wholesomeness.  I could meet someone of the opposite sex and walk into a courthouse somewhere, get married and that document would be honored anywhere in the world.  It makes no difference to anyone if I just met a perfect stranger and tied the knot on a whim.  All that matters to them is that I have a document...
For you see, because I'm heterosexual and because Conservatives even though they despise women still don't hate heterosexuals, as one, I can marry any heterosexual .... and so can you.

So in essence, the sole Conservative reason boiling down to having a sanction as to why gays cannot marry, is because if we do allow them to do so then we have erased the last bonds that make them subservient to us.  They are no longer that "caste" beneath us.   They are equal and can then, heaven forbid, be free to climb up the status ladder to levels even far above us. Yep. that is the only Conservative argument still standing as to why gays should not get married....

The way they say it when they're stone-ass drunk?  You can't get married because I'm a bitter old fart and my life sucks so you are going to have to be more miserable than I am... , so suffer bitch....
I couldn't have characterized conservatives any better myself....
Whereas that characterization may have been perfectly fine if we lived in Idi Amin's Uganda all the way back in the 70's, it doesn't represent the values within our Declaration of Independence.  Nor does it reflect the principles of our Constitution.
All men are created equal.  It does say "all", correct?

Granted.  It took America too long to realize that people with melanin in their skin were people too.  It took America too long to realize that people with estrogen and breasts, were people too.  It has likewise taken too long for America to understand that people who like people who happen to be of the same gender as themselves,  are people too....

It is simply time, ladies and gentlemen.

(And who says they have to have sex?  You?  Who probably haven't gotten "the good stuff"  in your marriage for... how long?)
It is simply time.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  There's an old joke that goes something like (5+ / 0-)

"If you want gay folks to stop having gay sex let them get married. Nothing stops sex like getting married."

I've even known some anti-equality types who'd be OK with lesbians getting married because it wouldn't involve anal sex. Because, apparently, that's the extra icky kind of sex so it has to be banned.

You can't assassinate the character of any of modern conservative. You'd have to find where it was buried, dig it up, resurrect it, then kill it. And killing a zombie isn't really assassination, is it?

state traditionalist morality -- from the ancient Israelites to Victorian England to the Prussian Kingdom and Nazi Germanyh -- didn't bother to criminalize lesbian acts because female sexuality was so utterly unimportant to them.  Women were baby machines, cooks, and minders of children (especially sons), and nothing else.

Not every one is going to enjoy gay sex.
This is true. However (and Im not sure what the use of blockquotes here signifies as there are no links or attributions) this:
Marriage has nothing to do with sex. Never has. Never will.
Seems a bit off.  Gay/stright issues aside, I don't think that is true; nor should it be.

People who are married may or may not have sex.  People who are not married may or may not have sex.  Has nothing to do with whether or not people have sex.

Marriage is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for sex.  Sex is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for marriage.

There is no causal relationship between sex and marriage, in either direction.

Sex and marriage may go together like a horse and carriage, but these days we have these things called automobiles.

But, you know, plenty of hetero folks have some pretty freaky proclivities, not that there's anything wrong with that. Just ask David Vitter, or Dick Morris, or....

Well, any Conservative Republican church-goin' guy with two divorcee girlfriends and hookers on the side in addition to the wife.

    anti-gay mind.

You're right, it's about gay sex.  And opposing same sex marriage does absolutely NOTHING to affect gay sex, other than possibly to encourage promiscuity.

Gay marriage does not increase gay sex, almost certainly decreases it.  So wherefrom the motivation to outlaw it?

For one thing, it's the clueless idea that, despite all evidence to the contrary, supporting gay marriage somehow puts one on record as supporting gay sex, when in fact it should put one on record as encouraging a reduction in promiscuity.

And there is one other thing.  Because these people feel that THEIR sexual activity (which can be pretty damn "non-standard," let me tell you) is somehow superior to that of gay people, and therefore, THEY are superior to gay people.

Consequently, they feel justified in denying people they view as inferior to themselves the same rights as they possess.

This is nothing new.  It's been a shameful blot on this country since its inception, and the shame is only being peeled back a layer at a time, over centuries.  There are a lot of layers, but not as many as before.  Thankfully, this one is about to be relegated to the trash bin, and it won't be soon enough.

just legalized marriage equality, and the French President has promised to sign.  The first same-sex marriages in France will probably take place in June.
