Welcome to Sunday Puzzle -- now in its new day and time, Friday evenings at 8 Eastern / 5 Pacific.

Sunday Puzzle is a chance to have fun, socialize, and exercise your wits (or to watch other people exercising theirs).

These are puzzles you're not going to find anywhere else. We try to work in clues and answers with cultural and political references of special interest to Kossacks. (And comic book references. Everyone loves comics, right?)

Tonight's puzzle, for instance, spotlights something which might be of special interest to members of the Monday Murder Mystery series.

Sunday Puzzle has been a regular feature since Julie Waters started it, back in October of 2007. If you're new to Sunday Puzzle, you might enjoy browsing through the archives of old puzzles.

I'm running late, so tonight's diary features only one puzzle. But I think it should be hard enough to hold folks for a while. And we'll have a larger variety of puzzles next week, when it's potluck puzzle party!

On tap tonight: a 69-clue JulieCrostic. Everyone's welcome, so come on down and join the party!

If you're not familiar with JulieCrostics, don't panic!

An Explanation of JulieCrostics

What you do is solve the clues and write the answers in rows.

All the rows have the same word-length pattern. If the first answer in one row has 5 letters, then the first answer in all the rows will have 5 letters.

Each word in a row contains all the letters of the previous word in that row, plus one new letter. Write the added letters in the space between the word which doesn't have it and the word which does.

The vertical columns created by the added letters will spell out a word or phrase. The object of the puzzle is to solve all the clues and read the vertical message.

On Saturday nights we have a companion series, Sunday Puzzle Warm-Up, which features introductory puzzles. In those, most of the clues are straightforward definitions or synonms, and you are provided at the start with the number of rows
in the puzzle and the number of answers per row.

But in the regular Sunday Puzzle series we try to make things a little more challenging. So:

(a) The clues are grouped in bundles of 3 regardless of how many answers there actually are per row. (If the number of answers does not divide evenly by 3, I add blank clues at the end to fill out the last bundle.) One of the first things you'll need to figure out is how many answers there are per row.

(b) Capitalization has been omitted from the clues, so you'll need to provide your own.

(c) Punctuation may also be deceptive. If you have trouble with a clue, try punctuating it differently and see if the new way of reading it leads to an answer.

There are some devious clues, but you'll catch on to the tricks soon enough. So here are tonight's clues. Have fun trying to solve them!

(And please: don't post any answers in the subject lines of your comments. Use the subject line to let people know which clue(s) your comment deals with, but keep the answers themselves safely inside the comment, so that those who don't want to know the answer yet won't have the puzzle spoiled. Thanks!)

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

It's raining here, which should be good for the garden (although the cats were happier with the non-rainy days earlier this week).

I'd hoped to post a few additional puzzles tonight -- especially a new AnaGremlin and a new Cryptic Crossword -- but was running too far behind to get them typed up. Ah, well -- this means I should be a little ahead for next time...

I got an e-mail from her earlier today that an agency is will be inspecting her home again (in conjunction with the adoption she's hoping to get approved) and she wasn't sure how late that would last.

Alas, several major life complications came up here, so I have not done a good job on getting word out about the change to Friday nights. I'll try to get word out a little better before next Friday rolls around.

Nova, this is pretty hard, and without a full crew of people, I won't get very far.   Looks like Friday isn't working - at least without a few others knowing about it.    Maybe you should pull the diary and repost it Sunday, and then try again next Friday (or stick to Sunday)

BTW, I have my final exam next Friday evening (150 students), so I can't be here next Friday anyway....

I hesitate to pull the diary. But posting it again on Sunday sounds like a good idea.

In the early days Julie often had puzzles which went unsolved the first time posted, and she'd re-post them as leftovers the next time. So perhaps what would work well is for me to post the diary on Friday but, if we don't get enough folks on Friday, leave the puzzle unsolved and post it again at the usual time on Sunday (with a note saying it already posted on Friday so that people can look back to the Friday comments if they want).

if it's only a couple of people on Friday, that won't work.    I'd go ahead and pull it completely.    Then on Sunday, over the first few minutes I can give the answers I've got (15 out of 68 isn't too much) and see if anyone joins in.

Without sny and Nova during blueberry season, maybe keeping it going in late summer won't be a good idea, but that can be discussed later.

• ##### tentative plan...(3+ / 0-)

I'm inclined to leave this up (so that people can perhaps discover it) but for us to largely bail out for the night and return on Sunday.

(I'll check back in periodically during the night, so that if any new person stumbles on this they won't feel alone in a deserted house.)

But I'll re-post the puzzle Sunday at the usual time, and we can return to the puzzle then. I had two additional puzzles I'd intended to post tonight (But wasn't able to type up in time) so perhaps will include those on Sunday.

Let's try again with Friday next week. I'll try to do a better job this coming week of getting word out about the new Friday time.

My apologies for doing a very bad job on that this week. Mid-week a couple of major complications came up. Some neighbors I'm helping are having serious medical problems and extreme difficulty getting insurance; and what my housemate thought was asthma turned out to be a collapsed lung and he's now in intensive care.

• ##### coming back in a couple of days sounds good...(3+ / 0-)

I think that's the best plan. Folks who want to can continue working on this between now and Sunday but we can wait on more group solving until then.

And I'll post a couple of additional puzzles on Sunday, so taht if people have mostly solved this one between now and then there'll still be something to play with.

One of the puzzles I'd intended to post tonight was a Cryptic Crossword, in case OldPhart was able to attend tonight. I'll post that one Sunday, and have additional ones ready for the next few Fridays.

Neither an end nor endin' is the correct answer to 21. But here's a big hint to what is.

As is often the case when a clue is hard to crack, consider that the punctuation may have been tampered with.  In this case, two punctuation marks were removed. (More precisely, the same punctuation mark was removed twice.)
