A few weeks ago, my friend Sreeizzle2012 asked me if I'd help advocate for him to win one of the scholarships to Netroots Nation 2013. I told him yes, of course I would and I've been promoting him to my family and friends as well as here on Daily Kos. I wrote a diary about how I met Sree and how he was the main motivation for the Virginia/DC/Maryland meetups that we started last summer.
I really would like Sree to win, because I know how important it is to him to go, he's been talking about it since we started chatting on Facebook two years ago, but also, I believe that he'd be an asset to any group he participated in. He's had the effect of motivating me to do more here in the Daily Kos community, and he's motivated some of my non-Kossack friends and relatives to participate too.
When I realized that you didn't have to be a member of Daily Kos to vote, I began to ask some non-DK friends and relatives. I started with my husband, then my son. I asked my sisters who are not on Daily Kos, but they've both met Sree when we've had meetups in Maryland.
I've asked many of the people I know from here on Daily Kos and most of them have come through unless they've already voted for someone else.
I asked friends who are sympathetic to progressive causes. Some of them voted, but some just ignored my emails (including two of my best friends :(
After weathering the rejection, I've expanded my quest, and I'm sending facebook posts to friends and cousins who might be republicans for all I know. I'm finding about one out of three come through.
I sent a message to the mother of one of my granddaughter's friends and she voted for Sree immediately. Delia is a girl scout leader and her older daughter is a girl scout. So the next time they're selling cookies, I will be sure to buy a box. Some of us -- parents, grandparents -- do this. We look out for each other's kids.
My sons aren't working toward any causes now. They're both older and established in their careers. My grandchildren aren't selling cookies or trying to win scholarships, that's a few years away. Sree isn't my son, but since my sons don't share my passion for Daily Kos and progressive causes, in a way, Sree can be my stand-in kid in Kosland.
So, please, vote for Sree for the scholarship for Netroots Nation. (Click on the big blue button).
Fri Apr 26, 2013 at 9:48 PM PT: I've checked and saw that one of my best friends has voted for Sree, and the son of another one did. So that's okay.
