DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too!
I enjoy physical quilt classes. But they have their limitations; mostly schedule. But there are ways around this: digital learning.
There are oodles of how-to videos on You Tube. I think we’re all familiar with Missouri Star Quilt Company’s videos. They are a great source for what to do with those pre-cuts we can't resist. One of their latest is how to make churn dash blocks using layer cakes and charm squares. Video
Then there are DVDs. I owe my interest in turn-edged appliqué to DVDs. I took a local class which was so-so. But the teacher recommended a book by Piece O’Cake Designs (this is their latest appliqué book.) But better than their book is their DVD. They show you how to make the appliqué stitch. Which beat what we were told in class: “You want your stitches to be straight, not slanted, on the back.” ??? But what if you want to machine appliqué? I really enjoyed Karen Kay Buckley’s DVD. I was lucky enough to be able to take an actual class with Karen Kay Buckley this spring, and the class really reinforced what I learned in the DVD. It will also be a great reference to refer back to as I use her technique.
There are online quilt shows. QNN TV is one provider. They have a bunch of shows. Sometimes they offer free excerpts. This free video of Patrick Lose’s binding technique has some great tips and tricks.
And the latest innovation is online classes. I have found Craftsy’s to be high-quality and very user friendly. Their Block of the Month is free if you want to check it out. If you’re interested, get on their mailing list because they offer specials all the time. Oh, and remember that thing I said about schedule? I was so thrilled when they offered an appliqué class by Beth Ferrier. She doesn’t travel much, so this was an opportunity to take a class from her way before our schedules and locations would ordinarily allow.
What experience have you had with digital learning? Do you have a digital “class” that you really enjoyed? Please share with us.
