Now that Mark Sanford has made his return official, I'm left wondering if we should make him a national issue in 2014.
After all, here's a guy who flagrantly violated a court order not to show up at Jenny Sanford's house without permission--and in all likelihood did so several times. It progressed to the point that Jenny actually had to file a no-trespassing letter with the Sullivan's Island Police Department. Then he publishes private phone numbers of people who call him online. And yet, despite all that, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott STILL endorse him. It's not exactly a coincidence that almost immediately after Graham and Scott endorsed him, Sanford's polling numbers rebounded.
If a private citizen were to engage in this sort of behavior, he'd have long since been fired, and possibly committed. But instead, he gets the stamp of approval from his state's two Senators--one of whom whose stock in trade is his devout Christian faith. What Graham and Scott have essentially done is say that you can flout court orders and plaster the phone numbers of private citizens online, and it's perfectly OK. Seems to me that this is something we should hammer on nationally in 2014. After all, to my mind this is the clearest proof yet that the Republican Party is fundamentally unfit to govern.
