This is horrible:
Erie School District officials are allowing students to leave McKinley Elementary School, but only in the company of their parents. Erie police said a teacher's aide was shot this morning around 10:20 near McKinley, 933 E. 22nd St. The woman's condition is unknown. A suspect is in custody. Eastside Erie schools were put in lockdown.
Parents who are now at the school are being allowed into the building to get their children, but school officials are asking parents to avoid coming if they aren't already there.
All students will be released at 1 p.m., an early dismissal. Kristian Muldrew, 8, who left McKinley school with tears streaming down his face, was among those picked up, by his mother, Leetoya Muldrew. He said he was in his classroom this morning when he heard five shots. He said he looked out the window and saw a woman laying on the ground, who then got up and started running. She kept looking back as she ran. He said he knew her because she would come in and help out during lunch. "I was panicking," Leetoya Muldrew said after hearing the news and rushing to the school. She and more than 70 parents arrived at the school this morning to retrieve their children.
The school district at first resisted dismissing students until the suspect had been apprehended. He surrendered to police a short while ago.
The story has now been updated:
The woman's condition is unknown.
A suspect is in custody. Eastside Erie schools were put in lockdown.
Some way, some how, the gun violence in this country has got to stop.
