While congressional Republicans were parsing word-by-word and minute-by-minute the way the administration described the September 11, 2012, attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, a lying sleazebag from South Carolina was elected to congress, would-be killers and terrorists were given the instructions on how to build an undetectable plastic gun on the internet, and 19 more Americans, including two children, became victims of gun violence at a Mother’s Day parade in New Orleans.
The Republican obsession with Benghazi has nothing to do with searching for truth and strengthening weaknesses and everything to do with keeping an issue alive for their own gain.
GOP attempts to extract some election mojo from “Fast and Furious” and Solyndra failed to pay off, so, with 2014 and 2016 in their sights, Republicans have now latched onto Benghazi as the hyped-up “scandal” du jour.
(The epic hypocrisy of the GOP rooting about for scandal in the Benghazi attack has been the subject of many detailed diaries, including my own.)
Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) said during a radio interview Friday that the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi could lead to President Barack Obama’s impeachment.
Although Inhofe failed to say upon what charges the president might be impeached, when the host pointed out it was unlikely the Senate would vote to convict Obama even if the GOP-controlled House voted to impeach, Inhofe replied, “I understand that. I’m not talking about it now. This is something that could last until after the 2014 elections.”
I agree with Senator Nancy Pelosi (D-California), who said Saturday on MSNBC, "We want to find out what did happen, but … then it becomes an issue that is subterfuge: 'Let's talk about Benghazi forever, so we don't have to talk about what the American people want us to talk about.'”
Things like jobs, the economy, gun violence, immigration, overturning Citizens United, Syria, North Korea, you name it. Pretty much anything but the transparent and hypocritical bullshit that is Benghazi.
