Welcome to Red States new regulations about obtaining ID.
I recently have moved back to Idaho. During my rather long and convoluted trip back to Idaho after visiting with good friends in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma I have hit the ID brick wall. Somewhere in Colorado I lost my wallet and consequently all of my ID.
However, several months ago I had made photocopies of my drivers license, SS ID, Federal retirement ID and my bank card for a different purpose. So at least once I arrived here in Idaho and set up my computer I was able to print out the copies. That has been a little helpful in some ways but not at all for attempting to get new ID.
Within 2 days of arriving here I went to DMV to get an Idaho drivers license and attempt to set up a new account at a local credit union. No can do. The photocopy of my Wyoming Drivers license is not acceptable but Idaho DMV assured me it would only take a couple of days to receive verification back from Wyoming about my still valid license there. That was about 4 weeks ago. Nothing yet.
This past weekend I had to go to Wyoming to retrieve some of my belongings. So First thing I went to the DMV, showed them my photocopy, filled out all their paper work and they refused to give me a replacement DL without a birth certificate, SS card, utility bill addressed to me at my old Wyoming address, or a passport, etc. etc. etc. My DL is still valid until October of this year but they would not give me a replacement because it expires this year.
So now I must travel to the various offices in other cities in the state in order to get replacement SS card, Fed retirement ID, a new passport, etc. etc. etc. All of this costs money and time and travel to do. It is too much. And I am sure I'm exactly the type person they are targeting. Retired, in my 70's and always a registered voter.
The frustration level for me is out of bounds. I cannot imagine what it will be for others who may be less able to do all of this jumping through hoops.
Of course I am writing to and calling the state representatives to express my disdain and disapproval, but they have certainly made it so blinking difficult that many will not go through what I will have to especially if it is just to have the right to register to vote. I have help and at the moment the available funds. . .many will not.
A very frustrated and angry Shirl in Idaho.
Anyone else run in to this mess?
