Received this e-mail today from Senator Tom Harkin (D. IA) calling for action to stop cuts to Social Security:
Thank you so much for joining with me to oppose unfair, unnecessary cuts to Social Security in President Obama’s budget outline last month. Now, I need you to help me again by taking the next step.
On April 24, I introduced a concurrent resolution expressing Congress' opposition to slashing Social Security benefits and raising taxes on middle class Americans using the chained CPI.
So far, 18 senators from all over the country have signed on. But to keep the pressure on President Obama and House Republicans to drop this chained CPI scheme, we need more cosponsors.
Will you help recruit more cosponsors by tweeting at the Senate today to urge them to sign onto my resolution opposing unfair cuts to Social Security?

I believe there is a lot to like in President Obama's budget outline. But we simply can't allow cuts to Social Security -- a program that, by law, cannot contribute a nickel to the deficit.
President Obama offered this concession because he wants to compromise with House Republicans in order to secure a fleeting "grand bargain" on the budget. But, like always, the Republicans aren't interested -- rejecting the President's budget immediately and demanding more unnecessary, damaging cuts.
Cutting Social Security will not help solve our long-term deficit challenges. It will not help improve the economy. If anything, Social Security as it currently functions underestimates the financial challenges facing the middle class -- and chained CPI would make it worse.
We need to send a powerful message to show we won't accept unfair, unnecessary Social Security cuts.
Will you help me recruit more cosponsors for my resolution opposing chained CPI by tweeting at the Senate today?

Slashing Social Security would be a moral and economic disaster. It's not the way to balance our budget. And we can't let it happen.
Thank you for standing up for the most vulnerable among us by contacting the Senate today to urge them to join me and oppose the chained CPI.
Sincerely,
Senator Tom Harkin
