Remember Bob Dole? That's this guy:
The Republican candidate for President in 1996.
You can also find him here:
Appearing on the Senate floor on December 4, 2012 to defend an United Nations treaty which would ban discrimination against people with disabilities
Senators from both parties went to greet Mr. Dole, leaning in to hear his wispy reply, as he sat in support of the treaty, which would require that people with disabilities have the same general rights as those without disabilities. Then, after Mr. Dole’s wife, Elizabeth, rolled him off the floor, Republicans quietly voted down the treaty that the ailing Mr. Dole, recently released from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, so longed to see passed.
In the aftermath of the measure's failure, 61-38, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had this to say
It is a sad day when we cannot pass a treaty that simply brings the world up to the American standard for protecting people with disabilities because the Republican Party is in thrall to extremists and ideologues.
Right on Harry, and it looks like Senator Dole agrees.
In an appearance today on Fox News Sunday Mr. Dole was calculated in his criticisms, but they were cutting nonetheless.
Reagan couldn’t have made it
Arguing that the late "patron saint of modern Republicanism" would have been unable to find a home in today's GOP. He then went on:
I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors that says ‘Closed for repairs’ until New Year’s Day next year. Spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas.
I agree with this so very much, Senator, but only because I am certain that if the Republican party shuts its doors right now they will never be opened again. Circling the drain.
Kudos Bob.
