DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too!
In March I attended Mountain Quiltfest in Pigeon Forge, TN. I had a very nice week there, taking classes and checking out the quilt show. Today I thought I’d share some of the quilts I saw.
All the ribbons had these little paper pieced quilts:
The show has a youth category. All of the entries were hand quilted, if I recall correctly. I especially liked the colors in this entry:
Several entries were from a guild challenge. I enjoyed seeing the effect color has on the same pattern:
hopefully you can see this, but I really liked the effect of the red and white striped fabric on the bias stem.
This one I liked because it’s purple. It’s hand appliquéd, hand quilted. And it’s a different quilting pattern than I’ve seen, which I found very interesting. I’m not a member of the quilt police, I think machine quilting is just fine. But it was heartening(?) to see so much hand quilting; it would be a shame if the art were to be lost completely.
Every year there is a challenge. You are given a package of fabrics to use, and a theme to express. This year’s fabrics and theme had to do with the Civil War. There were a lot of entries, and these are just a few that caught my eye.
I think this won the top prize. The relief the quilter achieved with trapunto and stitching was really excellent.
I liked the color and movement in this quilt:
This will always be the “tornado” quilt to me. It just struck me as the perfect representation of the tornado that struck N. Alabama in April 2011. But the quiltmaker was illustrating “The Flight to Freedom.”
The show also has a professional category. And we are lucky to have a fabulous quilter in this region: Linda Roy of Knoxville. She has won numerous AQS awards.
All hand work. Here’s a close up of the embroidery, stuffed appliqué, and hand quilting:
I hope you enjoyed this show & tell. If you'd like to know more about Mountain Quiltfest, info will be available here in early fall, if I remember correctly.
