100 years ago today, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring had its first public performance.
From Wikipedia: When first performed, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913, the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a sensation and almost a riot in the audience.
Universally considered the most groundbreaking, influential piece of music of the 20th century. What an amazing experience it must have been to witness that very first performance.
I'm not going to get into a detailed description here. I just wanted to give a shout out to an amazing work of art. I have been a Stravinsky fan for most of my life, and while "The Rite of Spring" is not my favorite Stravinsky composition, I have a great appreciation for its raw power and the liberating influence it had on so many composers, contemporarily and subsequently.
I was sure someone more competent would have published a diary on this 100th anniversary. Alas, it has fallen into my less than capable hands.
Turn it up and Enjoy.
So, what is your favorite Stravinsky piece, or if Stravinsky is not your cup of tea, anyone other composer's piece?
