Last night Senator Elizabeth Warren held a briefing call with over 11,000 students and activists. With the July 1 deadline for federally subsidized Stafford loan rates to double just around the corner, she called on everyone to make their voices heard.
“We have to do this together,” Warren said on the call last night, which we live-tweeted (here).
Senator Warren is also co-sponsoring Senator Jack Reed’s bill, the Student Loan Affordability Act. This legislation will keep interest rates at 3.4% for two more years, and may be voted on as soon as next week.
Robert Applebaum of Student Debt Crisis also spoke on the call, encouraging us to share our stories and why college costs are such a critical issue. “We are not just numbers on a piece of paper,” he noted. And – like Senator Warren – he encouraged listeners to let Congress know that.
Write your member of Congress about supporting the Student Loan Affordability Act and share your student loan debt story. College costs are continuing to rise, and we can’t afford higher loan interest rates.
