Susan Rice
National Security Adviser Tom Donilon is
stepping down, leading to two new appointments by President Obama that are sure to have Republicans screaming. (As if there's a major Obama appointment that
wouldn't have Republicans screaming.) Donilon will be replaced by UN Ambassador Susan Rice, with Samantha Power being nominated to fill Rice's current role.
Rice, of course, withdrew herself from consideration as secretary of state after Republicans targeted her for having repeated administration talking points on Benghazi on Sunday talk shows when Republicans didn't like the administration talking points. Now, the president is appointing her to a powerful role that doesn't require Senate confirmation. So, basically, OUTRAGE!!!
Samantha Power, meanwhile, will undergo Senate confirmation. Which means Republicans will have ample opportunity to scream about Benghazi throughout her confirmation hearings.
President Obama is expected to announce the new positions for Rice and Power later today. He's probably above finding a way to overtly rub it in Republican faces that even though Susan Rice won't be secretary of state, she's still getting a promotion. But it sure would be fun if he did.
