Received this e-mail from Congressman Bruce Braley (D. IA-01) who is running for Senator Tom Harkin's (D. IA) seat:
Friend --
Tell me if you've heard this one before: unless Congress acts, student loan rates are set to double on July 1st.
Sound familiar? That's because this is the same problem that we faced a year ago as interest rates were set to double. Then people like you took action by calling on members of Congress to work together to get a deal done, and we did. But it wasn't a long term solution. So here we are again, facing down the same problem, and putting at risk the opportunity for millions of students to afford a college education and continuing to saddle our graduating students with even more debt load as they're just getting started in life.
This isn't right, and it's time to fix to this problem. That's why I introduced the Student Loan Affordability Act, a bill that will keep interest rates low for the next two years, and will keep college within reach for more Iowa students.
Now I'm asking you to help get the word out about this bill by adding your name and sharing it with your friends on Facebook and Twitter.:

Two weeks ago the House Republicans passed a flawed bill that would result in unfixed rates as high as 8.5% , which means that not only could your rates more than double, but you'd also have uncertainty in what your interest rates would be month to month.
Not surprisingly, my opponents have already begun to try and distort the fact that I didn't vote for their bill, without mentioning that I've offered up alternative legislation which will go a long way to fixing this problem, without seeing rates double from 3.4% to 6.8% or higher.
Stand with me in telling House Republicans that it's time for a real solution, not one that will only make this problem worse. Add your name here: http://www.brucebraley.com/...
I know this was a cause many of you fought for last year, and I hope that you'll join me again in making sure that we get this right.
Thanks for all you do,
Bruce
