and you know you want to, ..  just do it.

When you finally make the decision, it actually is that easy. It is only a very short while; a day or two, a month or two. No big deal.     Just do it.

GUS (Gave Up,Giving Up, Gonna Give Up, Grumpy Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. We avoid discussion of political issues. If you are quitting or even thinking about quitting, please -- join us! GUS Library at dKosopedia is organically evolving, and stocked with free-range information: quit-smoking links, helpful GUS diary writing tips, and the GUS buddy list.

A message to ALL quitters. You don't have to avoid GUS if you have a failed quit.  We won't give you a bad time and we consider the failed quits as "practice" for the real quit.

In the beginning it seems to take ForEver for the days and weeks to accumulate. One day, three days, a week, two weeks, a month, three months, six months, a year.....Time seemed to drag while I waited to get cigarettes out of my system and far behind me. But that is a good thing when you look at it a certain way. Your brain is wondering what to do with all this extra time it has, now that it isn't reminding itself to re-up the nicotine dose all the time. I started noticing I was getting a lot more done and having a lot more fun. I still notice I feel a little healthier, month to month; not as dramatic as the first 6 months to a year, perhaps, but still a very pleasant reward. I have more energy, I get more done and I do feel better than a year ago. I remind myself regularly how happy I am to have quit.

When I first quit [2 Years Ago! at 8P.M. plus maybe a couple quarter leap days] I was a little discouraged by some of the long time quitters saying "5 years" "15 years" but the time just keeps passing and the milestones keep accumulating. And the money saved keeps piling up. I stopped counting when I got past $5,000.

I fill up all the moments I used to fill with smokin all the time by learning new tricks to help me get from one moment to the next without a cigarette.

Like this [check it out...]

You have to read the lyrics

"If I were The President..." takes my breath away.

Seriously, this woman writes a better lyrical thought than I had ever noticed before...

"...pull her all into your arms. ..."  >Lyrics

This is my favorite of her albums, another classic from 1989.

Growing excellent tasting vegetables in my backyard has also become a replacement addiction. I am much more dedicated than I was BIGUS [Before I Gave Up Smoking]
Oh, and fermenting. Fermenting stuff like sauerkraut and ginger beer is much groovier than stopping to smoke a cigarette every half hour or so.

So, I guess what I am trying to say is that there is a whole Universe out there in front of you that doesn't need  tobacco. And you will love it. And it isn't impossible to quit, just a short painful time that makes you hate tobacco companies.

JJ 001

And the abandoned animals that adopt you will love you for not smoking. Thank you GUSville for helping me quit, just being there and letting me be bonkers for a little while at the beginning. Thank you kitty cats for pretending like you know what is going on...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
