I had been searching for a scene in the series, "The West Wing" for several weeks. In the episode (FYI season 3 episode 6. "War Crimes") there is a leak. The White House Communications Director, Toby Zeigler (Richard Schiff) addresses his staff:
"We're a group. We're a team. We win together. We lose together. We celebrate and we mourn together, and defeats are softer and victories are sweeter because we did them together."
That sums up My America. WE are a team. When the economy grows, the proverbial rising tide lifts all boats. I don't care if an idea comes from a Democrat or a Republican, I care if it works. If I'm wrong and America prospers, I still win.
Go watch Barack Obama's Keynote speech in 2004 at the Democratic convention. Sure, he spends a lot of time selling the idea of a John Kerry Presidency, but the biggest cheers come when he talks about how there is not a Red America, and a Blue America, but a United States of America. Watch Republican speeches and the biggest cheers come when they talk about speaking to "Real Americans," and they mean people just like them.
Republicans talk about their pride in the Constitution, and their reverence for the Founding Fathers. Yet they spurn the very ideas they claim to venerate. WE hold truths unalienable. WE the people ordain and establish the Constitution.
The Right claims ownership to Christian values, but won't own up to being their brother's keeper. WE rebuild the bridge in Washington, and the one in Minnesota. WE need to spend the money to shore up the other bridges across this nation that are in danger of collapse. WE educate the children in Alabama as zealously as the children in Massachusetts.
WE are equally offended when the government wiretaps our phones whether regardless of the party of that government, and WE take equal pride in a victory over terrorism. WE may not like soccer, but, if we qualify for the World Cup, WE will watch and chant USA.
WE help each other. Not because we need to, not out of guilt, but because WE can. It's in our nature.
By the way, objectively speaking WE is US. and how do you spell US? U.S. how cool is that?
