For the past few months I've been out of work, and let me tell you, I'm going stir crazy. Well, this past week I began another job within the county, this time with the school board's printing services and Educational Technology department.
I can't really take credit for this one though. I'd been working with a few people to find a new position since before I had to sell my golf cart, and my mother in law found people in both printing services and ET who were willing to give me a shot based on the credentials I have and the work I've already done throughout the county. And thanks to my employment specialist, I'm getting paid fairly nicely to boot.
I'll also be working on getting set up with some orthopedic shoes for my long-time foot and leg issues due to my premature birth. My left leg is shorter than my right, which screws with my gait, and unfortunately my heel cord operation nearly 30 years ago didn't quite do the job it was meant to, so I can't move the toes on my left foot. Both issues make walking a bigger chore than it should be, despite being 'strong as an ox', as one relative described.
Either way, it's nice to have a routine again. The best part about all of this is that there's a very real possibility I could land a permanent position here, so I'll definitely work like hell to make sure I get to that point.
Even though I've only been there a week, I've come to see that just as much goes into preparing for the school year. Calendars, planners, tickets, business cards...a lot of printing jobs are sent to us to handle from all over the county. It really puts things in perspective when it cones to how much work people put into the education of children all over the country.
It also makes me sick to see education so readily subverted by wingnut politicians like Rick Perry or Michele Bachmann, or worse yet, watered down to the point that religion can be taught alongside legitimate sciences with respect to biology and our understanding of this place we call our planet.
With all that said, the next few months should prove interesting and rewarding.
See you around,
Homer
