I often hear the complaint that elections don't matter because there's not much difference between the two candidates. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to New Jersey's gubernatorial election.
After yesterday's historic Supreme Court decision striking down parts of the Defense of Marriage Act, Governor Chris Christie doubled down on his position that ensures second class citizenship for tens of thousands of New Jerseyans. His opponent, Senator Barbara Buono reaffirmed her support for marriage equality at a rally and press conference today in Trenton.
She talked about the dual-tier system of marriage for some, and civil unions for others by saying "separate but equal is not good enough", and called the governor "spineless" over his intransigence in civil rights. Regarding her daughter's decision to publicly announce that she's gay, Buono kvelled, "my heart is bursting with pride" about her daughter's bravery.
Here are her comments - from the rally on the State House steps and from the press conference that followed.
