Got a bit of problem, looking for some folks with experience in development wars, monkey-wrenching, civic activism, what have you.
I live in the Methow Valley in north central WA. A blue raft in a red sea. But politics, per se, is not the problem.
Up at our end of the valley, over the years, we've managed to block a ski resort, maintain a pretty impressive level of harmony with nature, yadda yadda: if you've been to Mazama, you've been pretty close to heaven.
Last fall, a high-end architect, Tom Kundig, and his pet builders did, effectively, a midnight raid on us, parking what looks like a freight container right on the edge of Flagg Mountain, overlooking Mazama.
More over the hump.
In doing this, he violated covenants that have been in place for 30 years, not to mention non-binding resolutions of every local community and environmental agency. He got the building permit, no problem, because this county (Okanogan) has no money for due diligence and, in any case, is generally pretty happy to screw the eco-freak DFHs in the Valley. There's a court case pending, but, fact is, the likelihood that we can take on deep-pockets for years and years is pretty small.
So far, the activism has been local only. I want to take it the Seattle, where Kundig's office is. I want to take it to the Internet. I want to take it to Architectural Digest. I want to take it to any professional organization that architects might be involved with. I need your help, if only in providing leads, methodology, whatever. If we can turn the SOB into santorum, all the better.
Here's some linky stuff, most of what's out there so far. Stay tuned.
