Addendum for June 19, 2013

Every year in the U.S.A., on average: *

-- Over 18,000 people kill themselves with a gun (51 each day)

-- Almost 12,000 people are murdered by a gun (32 each day)

-- Almost 600 people are accidentally shot and killed by a gun (1 each day)

-- Over 51,000 people are shot and wounded in an attack involving a gun (140 each day)

-- Over 16,000 people are accidentally shot and wounded by a gun (43 each day)

-- Almost 4,000 people are wounded attempting to kill themselves with a gun (10 each day).

Total killed by guns each year: Over 30,000 (84 each day)

Total wounded by guns each year: Over 70,000 (193 each day)

Total number of Americans either killed or wounded by guns each year: Over 100,000 (277 each day)

* Brady Campaign (gun deaths from police intervention not included here)

Do you think our government would act like they are sleepwalking if a terrorist organization managed to kill or wound over 100,000 American’s each year? Would our elected representatives simply say there is nothing that can be done. We know, of course, they would do plenty. And they would do it fast.

So why won’t they do something about gun violence in the U.S.A.?

Please help. Call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun controls. Do it today. And do it again next week. And then every week after that until they get the message.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  It is all about the money. When will it be about (11+ / 0-)

    the victims?

It is all about the money that the NRA wants to make for their manufacturers. Not one single person can tell me how background checks (or registration or licensing) in any way infringe upon anyone's rights, I mean other than felons.

It is perfectly legal for an individual (or a private dealer or anyone at a gun show that is not an FFL) to sell a firearm to a felon. Sure it may be illegal for the felon to buy it, but how can there be nothing wrong with a person selling to a felon and breaking no law? Even if there are laws against selling to felons in some places, all that the seller has to do is pretend he/she does not know the buyer is a felon and - presto - it is perfectly legal!

Illegal trafficking is the NRA's most important way to transfer legal guns into the criminal market, and the lunacy of it is that it is perfectly legal. Sure FFLs cannot do this without breaking the law, but anyone (other than these FFLs) can sell any firearm into the criminal market.

It is completely understandable that the NRA is fighting to maintain this channel to market as cutting it off would drastically reduce demand for the products they peddle, but what justification could any congress-critter have to continue obstructing regulations that do not violate the rights of any law-abiding citizen and are aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of criminals?

Thanks for your amazing work Tom Begnal.

    •  "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines (3+ / 0-)

I think most of us (even the gun rights advocates) do not have any issue with the background checks.  In that respect, it is quite obvious that the gun lobby is financially motivated (isn't everyone in politics?).

Let us craft some legislation that leaves out the "assault weapons" and high capacity magazines, and then force the legislative branch to represent the people who put them into office (I mean the voters in this case, not the lobbyists) or else....

Also I would be all for giving up the "assault weapons" and magazines as well if the military and police gave up theirs.

      •  I applaud your common sense, even if I disagree (5+ / 0-)

with you on high capacity firearms*.  It is great to see people that, like me, believe in the individual right to own firearms, but want to see common sense effective regulations like licensing, registration and background checks.  Hopefully more of the actual responsible gun owners will be joining us in calling for these regulations to be implemented.

        * I agree that the numbers of people shot with these are a small percentage of the total people that get shot every year (>105k), but just ask the survivors or the parents of a victim in Aurora/Virginia Tech/Columbine/Newtown how much comfort they get from the fact that their shot/dead loved ones are a small percentage of the problem? There has to be a limit to firearm capacity.  (Are RPGs ok? I don't think so, and the line between firearms and ordnance blurs more every day. Are depleted uranium bullets OK as long as they come from regular firearms? I don't think so and I wish even the military stopped using them as they do so much environmental damage as well.) The manufacturing technology has improved so much that semi-automatic handguns can fire off as many rounds (and just about as fast) as the machine guns that were banned back in the 1930s.  And while we talk about that, if you are against capacity limits does that mean you are also for lifting the ban on machine guns?

        •  Machine Gun Bans.... (2+ / 0-)

I do feel that most everything should be legal with serious strings attached to that statement.  I don't feel the weapons are the problem as much as the necessity for violence that pervades our species.

I think as a species we have a lot of growing up to do.  As a country, I think we should attempt to figure out why so many people feel the need to resort to violence.  Guns may have saved lives in the case of the Newtown incident as insane as that sounds.  My argument being:  the kid had serious mental issues and clearly wanted to cause some chaos.  What if he decided to fix up a couple homemade explosives?  There could have easily been a lot more than 26 dead.  I don't mean to be insensitive, but rather argue that the real problem is in the head of Adam Lanza.

Perhaps even the mass media?  I don't have the ratings for the major news stations on hand, but I am sure they were through the roof during the aftermath.  These mass shootings and serial killing sprees make for good television (as sick as that makes me to think about).  All that press leads to a lot of "loners" seeking to be noticed in any way they can.  Not to mention the violence that pervades movies, TV, and video games.

I am sort of going off tangentially here, but the main point I wanted to make is that we should work towards a less violent culture.  It is why I feel that sane, law-abiding citizens should have the right to own any type of weapon they would like (whether for protection or collection).  It is also why I feel we need to do a better job at keeping these weapons out of the hands of the criminally insane.  Where we converge is on your statement:

It is great to see people that, like me, believe in the individual right to own firearms, but want to see common sense effective regulations like licensing, registration and background checks.
      •  BTW, don't forget to tip/rec the diarist where (5+ / 0-)

      •  Sure, keep all firearms and magazines (5+ / 0-)

But register them and pay to insure them based on the hazard that they present when they are separated from their gun owner.

Every firearm would be classified according to its actual features that increase/decrease the menace potential.

        E.g. high menace hazard factors:
        concealable
        semi-automatic
        magazine fed
bump stock or other conversion to full auto

        E.g. low menace hazard factors
        not easily concealed
        single or double shot
safety indicator for a round in the chamber

    •  The NRA makes far more from membership dues (0+ / 0-)

      than from corporate donations:
      Membership dues: $100,500,000 (2010)
      Corporate donations: $14,800,000 (2005-2010)
That is over forty times more from their members annually than from corporate donors.
      Source: Bloomberg
The NRA's membership gained 250,000 new members a month in the aftermath of the President proposing the AWB & now has a million (and counting) more members. That isn't representative of a 'manufacturer conspiracy to sell to criminals'. It is representative of people not wanting to give up their liberties as a response to crimes committed by a murderer.

In this post you act incredulous that the background check bill didn't pass & it didn't have more support from gun owners because "no one can tell you how background checks (or registration, or licensing) infringe on anybody's rights"....then in this very same comment section you endorse a gun ban. And this endorsement comes from someone whom has claimed that he "supports the Second amendment" while he is a member of a group whose stated purpose is to repeal the Second amendment.
      Are you really this unselfaware?

The reason why the background check failed is because nobody trusts those that pushed the hardest for it.
Not the President; whom proposed the background check while simultaneously proposing a gun ban.
Not the Senator whom has publicly stated that she wants to confiscate all firearms, and brought up the AWB for a vote.
Not Bloomberg, who is the most shamelessly authoritarian politician in the public square.

And not you. No matter how much you try to deny your intents, we already know what they are...primarily because you have been so kind as to tell us.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither.
