No, really. These are supposed to be light and fluffy, and they're supposed to be sweet and delicious.

Now, where were we? Ah, yes, our sweet, fluffy friends. Doughnuts are fried dough, with a hole cut out in the middle to facilitate even cooking, except for the filled variety, which have no hole. Interestingly, doughnuts are made using either a batter (similar to cake batter) or yeast sweet dough. Yeast doughnuts need longer to cook.
And how do they cook doughnuts? DEEP FRIED, baby! Fat and sugar for the win!
Then, oh, and then ... they make it even better, and add toppings. Powdered sugar, glaze, icing, sprinkles - you take your pick. Or fillings. Custard, jam, jelly... mmmm. Or BOTH, for the completely sugar-addicted.
Wikipedia tells us that the first mention of doughnuts was in an 1803 "appendix of American recipes" from England. All evidence seems to point to doughnuts being an American invention, possibly of Dutch settlers. I know the Pennsylvania Dutch versions are delicious!
Now, grab a doughnut and a cup of coffee, and read the Top Comments for today.
