I wouldn't let them go out after dark alone anymore. Not in this country and definitely not in Florida. I am a parent and a grandparent now, I'm also White and I think I have lived long enough to feel that I know a little something about parenting teenagers and race relations in this country.
I keep playing in my head what Trayvon could possibly have done to get out of the situation he was in unharmed. As a parent we try to think of all the possible scenarios that might put our kids in danger when they are old enough to go out into the world after dark without us. The burden of this is greater when your child is of a different race, ethnicity or sexual orientation living in a country that has a history of murdering individuals who are different. So what do you say?
If someone starts following you run away and call 911 or yell 911 or knock on doors. If Trayvon had started to run away I have no doubt that he would have been chased and shot anyway. And the verdict would have been the same because the defense would have argued that their client had to do something because there was a black male acting suspicious after dark in his neighborhood. Their client felt he was in danger and that the neighborhood was in danger, he was only trying to keep a crime from happening and protecting himself.
Or
If someone starts following you and coming after you then make a stand and defend yourself, be a man. It won't be the first time you will have to fight for yourself. After all, you have to start acting like a man, in the culture that has defined for you what manhood means, sometime. But wait what if your stalker has a gun? Oh you didn't know he had a gun? Well you won't stand a chance. But I won't tell you that because I don't want you to be afraid to go out into the world and the thought of it kills me. You acted courageously kid. You died a man at the hands of a coward.
Now you deserve justice.
