What's your favorite children's book?
When it comes to children's books, there are two ways to look at them: 1) books you loved when you were a kid and 2) books you love to read to your own (or someone else's) kids.
As a very small child, in my pre-reading days, my folks told me that my favorite book was The Little Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings, published in 1945 and written by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. I don't remember the story that well, but I remember the cover very well, which is probably why I liked the book.
As I got older, I discovered Dr. Seuss and it was all over. My favorite book was Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, but I never met a Dr. Seuss book I didn't like. I always loved reading them to my kids, too. My youngest son is named Sam because of Green Eggs and Ham. When we were searching for a name, my older son, then about 2 1/2 years old, suggested we call him Sam I Am. Mrs. Dragon and I both liked the name and we went with it. (Not the "I am" part, but the "Sam" part.)
Almost from the day our kids were born, we read to them constantly. We even had waterproof books they read in the bathtub. My favorite book to read to them was Maurice Sendak's classic Where the Wild Things Are. The illustrations are the best ever. Another favorite was Rudyard Kipling's "The Elephant's Child" from the Just So Stories. I got to do all kinds of voices in that one! And I love the version pictured here with fabulous illustrations by Tim Raglin.
One book that we read to the boys was about poop. Yes, poop, as in excrement. It is called The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit. A mole gets his head pooped on and he examines various animal scat in order to locate the culprit. (Spoiler Alert: The dog did it.) Naturally, since it was about poop, the boys loved it.
There were lots more great books we read to the kids. Eric Carle's books were favorites, and we loved the If You Give a Moose a Muffin series. Oh, and the author of Clifford the Big Red Dog, which is not one of my favorite children's books, is Norman Bridwell, a Kokomo, IN native. One of our high school students designed this city limits sign a few years ago:
So that's about it for me. What are your favorite children's books?
