My screenshot of the comment.
Sorry for the short diary, but I felt I had to share this with someone. The only reason I bother with yahoo at all is because my email has been on there for years so when I go to check it sometimes I get click-baited into some of their posted links.
SOme background on Yahoo comment sections for those who are unaware: For some reason, their comments sections are always wildly conservative- perhaps because people who still use Yahoo.com skew older these days. They say outlandish things and spew the anti-Obama rhetoric even on non-political articles. But I never have quite seen it reach outright racist levels (usually, they at least hide it behind code words). The comment I found below the jump:
The article link:
Here
The comment in question, which when I saw it had 42 upvotes and no downvotes:
"" In the past 50 years, Detroit's racial landscape has gone from approximately 80% white residents to 80% African-American"
LOL,LOL,LOL and you wonder why the city was in the Toilet ready to be flushed, I say no more."
Now, I know this isn't the biggest deal or the most shocking thing ever witnessed, but I found it distressing, if not surprising, that people who constantly scream "RACE-BAITING!" anytime someone dares to bring up race as a way to shut down the debate are the same people who overwhelmingly side with blatantly racist comments like this one.
If Yahoo wants to fix its problems, it could start by getting more sane people to post comments.
11:54 AM PT: As of right now, I can't see that specific comment anymore. Perhaps Yahoo has some moderating after all? Good thing I took the screenshot.
Let me know if any of you can still see it.
