Good bye Florida, California here we come!
My wife and I have been lucky enough to schedule a few weeks in Florida each of the past few years to help get through the long, cold, depressing New York area winter. We love that time and had contracted, once again, to rent a nice little house in South Florida starting in January.
Then we found out that hunting black people is apparently now legal in Florida. Jump across the orange interstate cloverleaf with us...
We know it's not much, but to honor Trayvon Martin and to protest George Zimmerman's acquittal we decided to more than double our drive and go to Southern California instead. All the money we spend on lodging, food, entertainment, golf, and gas will all be taken from Florida and go to California. It's a bit of a pain in the neck for us - we travel with our dog and cat - and four long driving days to get out there but we want to do what little we can to send the message that the "stand your ground" law that enabled an armed vigilante to get away with hunting and gunning down a black teenager has economic consequences.
If anyone is in a similar position, consider changing your vacation getaway from Florida to the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico or California. Forget Disney World, boycott Epcot. Instead visit Disneyland and Universal in LA.
Florida: repeal the law or lose a considerable chunk of your tourist and snowbird income!
