If pablum
like this is serving as his central thesis for his presidential ambitions, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley is going to have a hard time getting any traction in the early states:
O’Malley, who said the Democratic Party has not “done a good enough job selling our accomplishments,” connected his 2016 deliberations to a broader concern about the direction of the country.
“You still see a lot of angst and anxiety for the vast majority of people who are working hard every day and seeing their buying power go flat and even decline,” he said. “We’re going through this crisis of confidence, and great republics sometimes go through these periods. Individuals call them the dark night of the soul.
“We’re going through a period of time of confusion and a time of polarization and a real crisis of whether or not we’re still capable as a people of accomplishing big and important things, none more important than restoring the balance to our economy so that our middle class can continue to grow and give more opportunities to each successive generation.
Thud. This is weak, muddled, WTF-is-he-talking-about central idea.
I think the American people, especially Democratic primary voters (if any actually show up), have heard enough national therapy sessions. The problem is this country is very simple and easy to articulate: Regular Americans aren't making enough money. It really is that simple. And the very simple solution to that problem is for a Democrat to find a creative way to run as Robin Hood. The American people, especially Democrats, aren't interested in 'balance' 'confidence' or any of that mental acrobatics. People want some goddamn money. I see poverty all around me in my community and it aint because of their mood. Its because they're broke.
The governor is especially not going to sell that 'polarization' BS to Democratic primary voters because they clearly see our political problem isn't partisanship. It is Republicans and to a lesser extent the Democrats too soft to confront them. The main problem is REPUBLICANS.
Look Governor, I like you. I think you've been a good governor and you've got potential as a presidential candidate. But you need not engage in national psychoanalysis. The American people want a concrete, clear path to more money in their pockets, their cabinets full with plenty, and a job with some dignity and respect. That's all you need to be talking about and thinking about. When people look at you, they should be thinking 'that guy means more money for me.' You pointing out people have anxiety is like saying dogs wag their tails. Put some bacon on the table Governor and add a sign that says 'Feel free to bring home.'
