Addition (response to later comments):
Some of the most convincing evidence that we're beginning to see a transition away from fossil fuels is, as some of the commenters have suggested, that mega-financiers like Storebrand and Rabobank are divesting from fossil fuel companies and instead are investing in sustainable and clean energy indexes. Goldman-Sachs and other major financial industry leaders are indeed beginning to advise against coal investments, and groups like Impax Asset Management and even the influential Stern Review are hailing divestment as both the morally right and financially smart thing to do.
Still, as commenters mentioned, the lobbying power of the fossil fuel industry presents a massive obstacle to overcome. As major financial players join in the movement away from fossil fuel dependence, however, it may be possible that that lobbying power can be overcome.
