Texas gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott on Sunday drew a rebuke from a Democratic Governors Association representative after appearing to thank a supporter who called Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis “retard Barbie.”
“@GregAbbott_TX would absolutely demolish idiot @WendyDavisTexas in Gov race - run Wendy run! Retard Barbie to learn life lesson,” read a tweet sent to Abbott, the current Republican attorney general of the Lone Star State.
“Jeff, thanks for your support,” came the response from Abbott’s verified Twitter account.

My opinion below the Orange Squiggle of Republican Doom...
Amazing. Incomprehensible. Utterly fucking insane. These are all apt phrases to describe not only this event, but the entire Republican War on Women.
The War on Women has been called a false narrative by Republicans for some time, ever since 2012 showed how effective the rallying cry could be for mobilizing women against the GOP. Yet every day, we seem to find ever more evidence that this isn't just some political propaganda tool to elect our side to office. From abortion rights restrictions that affect women's health clinics, to fighting against contraceptive access in Obamacare, to the many attempts to smear Democratic women simply because they aren't the height of physical perfection .... to this.
This. Words fail me in describing not only how utterly immoral this is, but how backwards and hateful and sheer rage inducing this really is. This woman, Wendy Davis, is the epitome of a fighting spirit. This is a woman who has overcome just about every obstacle American life can throw at a white woman, and come out of it smiling and ready for more. If she is not an American success story, I don't know what is.
Yet these people - and I use the term 'people' loosely, as it unfairly implies they possess higher reasoning skills and human compassion - would seek to insult her by calling her a 'barbie'. And this isn't even the first time I've heard this characterization. 'Abortion barbie' is another popular epithet used to denigrate Wendy Davis, merely because she stood up for her beliefs.
Would this level of rank hatred be part of this battle if Wendy Davis were a man? Not likely. Wendy Davis is a woman - strong and independent and free-thinking. With pithy quotes like these, it has become apparent that the Republicans - not just their base, but also their party leaders - fear such women. They fear them because they represent a 21st century view of women's rights, not a 19th century view. They fear them because this woman sure as hell isn't going to sit down and shut up while the men are talking. They fear them because such women are the future, and these Republican misogynists are the past - they just don't know it yet.
So let's help them find out. Let's kick these childish, hateful little punks out of elected office and back into the gated communities where they belong. Let's make sure they never close down another women's health care facility. Let's make sure they are never in a position to make another asinine, insulting public statement again.
