Read any good books this summer?
Help me find my next (Audible) book!
This summer I found myself mostly "listening" to books from Audible.com. One of the great advantages of Audible for me is that I buy an advance subscription (this is a necessity, not a luxury) and so pay $10 flat rate per book, regardless of whether it's still in hardback or over 1,000 pages. I listen during my hour long round-trip commute to work 3 days a week, I listen while gardening, I listen while doing mundane household chores. They're great for working out, taking long walks, or cleaning out your garage. I'll go find weeds to pull or a room to clean if I've got a good book going, so it's a less sedentary pursuit than reading with my eyes instead of my ears. I'm always looking for the next great "listen" so I'm looking forward to your own reads and suggestions in the comments.
So, in descending order through my summer:
My Current Listen:
Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison
by Piper Kerman. I'm finding plenty to relate to in this true story of a nice middle-class blonde woman whose adventurous past and 10 year old mistakes catch up with her and land her in a federal women's prison for a year. I like Piper primarily because she never assumes for a minute she's better than anyone else in prison, and it doesn't take long for sentencing disparities between women of color and herself to become apparent.
Just Finished:
The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer. This was one of my top favorite books of the decade. Packer lets the story of changes in the country's economics and social structures over since the 70's unfold through the lives of the numerous people he profiles, from the rich and famous to the laid-off factory worker. It's never preachy and it bears out every thought you've had about America's recent decline. The "unwinding" we're experiencing now isn't the first in the country's history, though things always seem the bleakest, I suppose, when they're happening in your own time. I really can't recommend this book highly enough.
Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer. I first heard the strategy of the Memory Palace in my diary about memory tricks and tips. Foer, a newly-graduated journalist, lived in his parent's basement while writing about obscure memory championships, where he was convinced to spend a year training for the American title. I won't give away the outcome of the championship, but Foer did admit that while he could eventually memorize dozens of names and faces and even two decks of playing cards in minutes, it didn't help him remember to drive his car home two days after the competition. That's right -- he didn't lose the keys to his car, or forget where he parked his car -- he forgot he even drove his car to dinner in the first place.
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. This is the only fictional book I listened to this summer, but it read like a true story. My advice is this: I fyou enjoy well-written fiction read this book, but do not read any book reviews, jacket covers, or teasers in advance. Let it surprise you. So far I've recommended it to three people who plunged in without knowing the "reveal" in advance, and all were delighted by where the book took them. Promise!
Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candace Millard, who also wrote the outstanding biography of Teddy Roosevelt's post-presidential adventure along The River of Doubt. As a medical person I'm always fascinated by medical mistakes and mishaps of bygone days (knowing that it's just different mistakes being made now), and President James Garfield's suffering at the hands of his doctors was worse than at the hands of his assassin. The story encompasses the true-believer's insanity of Garfield's killer along with frantic attempts by Alexander Graham Bell to invent a device to save him.
Slave in the White House: Paul Jennings and the Madisons by Elizabeth Dowling Taylor and Annette Gordon-Reed was both good and mildly disappointing as there was more background on the Madison's than on Paul Jennings himself, who began working in the White House at 10 years of age. I found the story needlessly dry and overly filled with suppositions about Jennings little-recorded life. Still, its well-worth the view into its time and the few interesting tidbits about Jennings relationship with Dolly Madison after he became a free man and after the President's death.
I'm probably not alone in noting that the number of actual books I read cover to cover has declined as my involvement in the online world has increased, though I spend more time than I ever have, reading reading reading! Here's a couple actual books I'm reading, called bathtub books because any time of year I love to soak in a bath and read a chapter or two.
Bathtub Books:
This Is Getting Old: Zen Thoughts on Aging with Humor and Dignity by Susan Moon. I'm fairly certain dharmasyd recommended this gem of a book that gently guides the reader to fully see and accept the physical limitations and mind expansions that are part of aging.
See tip jar for my just-finished bathtub book!
