My uncle sold me my first car for $10.00;  his girlfriend didn't like sliding over after the passenger door was smashed by someone backing out of a driveway.  The price was the cost of two concert tickets, and everybody was cool with me having a car, I just needed to get that pesky license!  Imagine giving me insurance and plates when I didn't have permission from NYS to drive!

Itzl Alerting

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!
We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone in IAN to write diaries for the group!  Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!   IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries.  Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime!
Ok,  we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

1962 Buick Special Skylark

This 1962 Buick Skylark Special Coupe resembles my Bee-Bee!

My first car (Bee-Bee, I called her) didn't look at all like this beauty (above).  She was two-tone, baby blue with a white hard top.  The passenger door was crunched and wouldn't open.  She was rusty all around, and I had contact paper folded over her fenders where they met the hood to keep water from splashing the windshield every time I went through a puddle.

But, oooooh, she was nice to drive!  She had the most luxurious interior available, and under the hood, there was a four barrel carburetor on an aluminum block engine!

Bee-Bee could fly!  She was small and light due to all the metal being rusted away and that aluminum engine, and she could take that hearty leaded gasoline of the time and turn it into wings.

Now, when a car is that rusty, you just put up with some of the problems, like, say, when the left front wheel fell off crossing the railroad tracks.  The guy who towed her was supposed to inspect the other ball joint, too, and since he didn't, and the other front wheel fell off pulling into a driveway, he ended up giving me a free tow and a discount.

This is almost like the luxury package in Bee-Bee!
Her speedometer went up to 120 mph.  And I knew a place where no cops could hide for a mile or more on the expressway.  I took her up over 100 mph, and I still had pedal to push, but you know, she was shaking pretty bad, (all that rust again?) and I really didn't want my car to disintegrate at 100 mph.  So I backed off the pedal and found a place to turn around and go home.

I had to replace my Bee-Bee when I could no longer get brake parts for her, and my dad talked me into a 1965 Impala.  That is another story.

What do you remember about your first car?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
