While we're enjoying our labour free day of veggie BBQ with family and friends there are over 150 concerned and dedicated ralliers just finishing up a
six day march which began August 28 in Fall River, MA and ends today in Barnstable, MA, near the future home of Cape Wind, the nation’s first offshore wind farm.
The Cape Wind Project will be the nation’s first offshore wind farm, built on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound. With 130 wind turbines, the project is expected to produce about 75% of the average electricity demand for the region. It could offset close to a million tons of carbon dioxide every year, and produce 1000 jobs for local residents during construction. However, those climate, health, and economic benefits have been held up by oil billionaire Bill Koch, who owns a vacation home on the Cape and has spent over $1.5 million on various efforts to delay the construction of the wind farm.
The family friendly march also includes musical performances, art, community potlucks, discussions, faith and spiritual experiences, and lots of opportunities to get to know fellow marchers and movement members as they walk the transition we want to see. Along the way they are rallying, singing and meeting new friends.
Let's join in virtual spirit to say thank you to those marching to make the future better for all of us.
