The State of Kansas, inspired by Governor Sam Brownback's war on the poor and the unemployed, will be kicking an unspeakable number of its poor citizens off of food stamps.
Per ThinkProgress:
Kansas plans to throw more than a fifth of its nearly 90,000 unemployed residents off of the food stamp rolls by reinstating federal work requirements for the program that are normally waived during times of unusually high unemployment. The state’s Department for Children and Families announced the move Wednesday and projected that 20,000 unemployed Kansans currently on food assistance will be affected.
These work requirements are being re-established despite the fact that the scarcity of jobs in Kansas is making it impossible for many individuals on food stamps to find work.
As Annie McKay of the Kansas Center for Economic Growth rightly noted:
“Taking someone off food stamp assistance isn’t going to suddenly create jobs for them.”
Meanwhile, Kansas Representative Mike Pompeo (R) is only 1 of 19 House members in favor of a military strike on Syria.
Which begs the question: how many cruise missiles does it take to feed 20,000 poor folks?
You don't want the answer.
