WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the Obama administration is considering deploying U.S. military trainers to help increase the capabilities of the Syrian rebels.
Officials say no decision has been made, but the plan would answer some lawmakers’ demands to increase aid to the Syrian opposition. Any training would take place outside of Syria, possibly in Jordan.
The new discussions center on whether the U.S. military should take over the mission so hundreds or thousands can be trained, rather than just dozens.
Well, you can't send in military trainers with out military security. And then if you have security, you're going to need logistical support. And then...
(sigh)
Now, if you're the Syrian/Iranian/Russian/Hezbollah side of this war and you want to draw America into another ridiculous quagmire, why not lob a few chemical shells across the border into the U.S. training areas? Just imagine the outrage! How dare they kill our troops with their WMDs! This means war! (and rightfully so.)
But really, why do we need to go down this road at all? Why do we need to be militarily involved when the Saudis have plenty of money to fund their own jihadist proxy war against Iran? The Saudis have their own robust military force...they can send their people if they want to. Why us?
Lets just hope Congress does President Obama a big, big favor and votes down this stupid, inane, pointless war. If the Syrian people want to kill each other, there is literally nothing we can do to stop them from doing so. With chemical weapons or other lethal means. The Pentagon has said publicly that an air strike will not destroy Assad's chemical stockpile, and we aren't even bothering to talk about the stockpile the jihadists fighting Assad possess. And then there's already mission creep. Now discussions about putting uniformed troops in harms way? Really?!!
President Obama has his hands full with the rollout of his signature accomplishment as president. The American people and Congress would do well to refocus his mind on that, and leave Middle Eastern politics to the locals.
