Everyone now, hopefully, knows about the horrendous acts committed against the people of Syria, by their own government. However, for those of you living in a cave the past month, take a look here and then read on.
With that part out of the way allow me to get to my point. On Aug 21, Syria "supposedly" gasses their own people which is terrible, an act so treacherous I cannot even fathom being the one to give the order. Flip the coin and you'll see that in 1949 there was a small forum put together called the Genenva Convention which laid out, among other things, that there would be no using chemical weapons because, the short version, chemical weapons really aren't an act of war, but rather terrorism.
As I write this today it has been over two weeks (20 days) since the attacks took place. I know that many media outlets call this a "supposed" attack by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, yet the U.S. and President Obama claim to have proof of this. Regardless of your feelings for the man, He is our president and I feel that we should give him the benefit of the doubt, don't you? No? Humor me...
Why has there been no action taken against president Bashar al-Assad? Yes, President Obama has been working hard to convince the powers that be that a missile strike is appropriate and necessary, and no, nothing has happened.
"But hasn't the U.S. moved ships into position in the Mediterranean Sea ready for a potential strike?" Yes, little Jimmy, they have. However, moving those ships around is about the same as tying a string to your tooth and then letting it dangle. Without anything on the other end there is a small chance the string will do some good, yet more likely you're just going to look like a fool.
I'm not trying to misrepresent myself, I am in no way knowledgeable to hold an adequate debate on the issue of whether or not we should strike Syria. I am merely an American with an opinion.
"Well then, what is your opinion?"
I am glad you asked Little Jimmy. You see, I would do it again...
"Do what?!"
I would lace the rebels with my Sarin just to prove how untouchable I was.
"WHAT?! Weren't you just saying that there should be action taken?"
Yup
"Weren't you just asking us all to "play along" and give the President of the United States the benefit of the doubt?"
Yup
"So what gives?"
Excellent observation Little Johnny.
"It's Jimmy..."
Whatever. Yes, I do feel something should be done and that we should all back the person we have elected, for better or worse, to be our President. Yet, nothing has been done, which is my point. At the Geneva Convention there were guide lines and rules set aside to prevent people from using chemical weapons, a line was drawn, a "Do Not Cross" line.
Syria crossed that line and have yet to face any consequence. It's like the neighborhood bully drawing the line in the sand and saying, "You better not cross! Or ELSE!" Then some brave, or stupid, soul crosses and the bully runs home to talk to his parents about what to do. There is no consequence, there is no fear if all we (the non-crazy part of the world) do is delegate who's responsible for what and take another vote. It's times like this I wish someone had the balls to take charge, say to hell with it all and do what needs to be done.
"Sure, and then when we don't have the evidence that same person is going to missile some country that doesn't deserve it."
Good point, I never said my opinion was without flaw, my point is that if I could put myself in the shoes of a Bat S*&T crazy lunatic, Bashar al-Assad, and I were looking to continue to gain ground against a rebel faction in my country, then I wouldn't be opposed to laying down some more Sarin since, clearly, the consequences aren't palpable.
"You're not advocating using chemical weapons?"
No, no. My point was that there needs to be more immediate consequences for the use of chemical weapons.
You see boys and girls, if all we ever do is talk about things, then what is ever going to get done?
"Thank you."
No, thank you Little Jimmy, thank you.
