I have decided to post this diary after being sidelined with medical issues for several weeks. In a rambling, rant diary I wrote recently about loud noises coming from motorcycles where bikers were celebrating whatever it was they were celebrating here in Milwaukee, My diary caught some readers as a surprise I guess.
Granted, and I must admit that some folks like noises and some do not, so having said that with respect to some comments from noise lovers, I will let that diary rest where all written diaries here at Daily Kos will eventually go to rest in peace, oh, and some purged to hell.
Now if anyone has already posted this Sarah Silverman video then I missed it, as I have not been in the mood to do much reading until yesterday when I caught it. I said to myself: "now why hasn`t this been talked about on Daily Kos?" If indeed it has been posted, I don`t really care, because I think writing my opinion in this diary makes sense to me, at least. And that is good enough.
Please ignore my writing if you have to, but please listen to the message in the video and make your own opinion be heard in a comment.
The first thing that came to my mind after deciding to write this piece was to make sure to reiterate and assert, that I do not post it to start a flame war of a pie fight with NRA gun members here on this site, or anyone who is not even a member - but owns a gun. So I ask you to read my take on this issue that I bring today in this diary.
I have seen and re-seen Sarah Silverman`s video several times. I honestly think, and get this, I don`t own a gun - that what she suggests in this video should really go viral and get not only Blacks, but Latinos and anyone who is hampered with a barrier, like a conviction from owning a gun -- to speak truisms, like those in this video.
I am not a lawyer obviously, but I think that a criminal conviction that happened years and years ago should not be used against anyone from enjoying the same second amendment right enjoyed by those without convictions. I think a constitutional right such as the 2nd, to bare arms should make old and remote convictions invalid in obtaining a gun permit and joining the Black NRA mentioned here.
Psst, listen. I know this is just a supposed joke by Sarah Silverman not withstanding that is on "funny or die" video, I really see nothing funny about her idea. I see only a well thought out video piece, reasonable in that Blacks who are on this video when they foresee how evenly measured the NRA would be if a Black NRA was established.
I really think that then, and only then could there be peace. It would end, if not curtail very significantly racism and would allow "everyone" every race here in america to really enjoy the safety of their children and homes from invasions by those who have gun permits.
Oh I am not suggesting that these people just go and invade homes, no, I am not saying that. But a person armed with a gun, and yes, those who claim to have one for hunting only has that potential, and security from arrest if a gun permit is shown and the invaded victim has a criminal past.
So in retrospect, like I said earlier, and I admit is only my personal dream. That old and very remote criminal or misdemeanor convictions be removed from being barriers for those of us who cannot own guns for that reason. Only then could america be safe from itself.
I would not wish or would I apply for a permit to a large automatic rifle. No my favorite since my younger days would be a sawed-off shotgun. Twelve-guage hung low on my leg like my favorite cowboy did then, Chuck Conners in "Rifle Man"
His was a rifle, mine would be a peace maker.
Now hold your fire!
