I am sure all of us are accustomed to writing our elected officials disparaging policy X, and getting a canned e-mail back thanking us for our support of policy X.  But this e-mail from Michigan Senator Carl Levin made me laugh out loud.

I recently moved to Michigan and lost no time sharing my opinions with my new senators and congressman.  As you might well imagine, this past two weeks I've been talking and writing about Syria.  Today I received a charming reply from Senator Levin.

"Dear Miss __,

Thank you for contacting me about climate change. I appreciate hearing your concerns about this matter..."  He went on about slowing climate change, and thanked me for writing to him.

The really fun part is, I haven't written the Senator about Climate Change.  I did write to him about the Pipeline some weeks ago.  I suppose this was in reply to that.   Maybe this is his only "ecology" boilerplate.  I look forward to seeing what his staff sends out about Syria.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I email them regularly with my concerns.  We all know that their staff members send "form letters" to constituents sort of in the ball park of those concerns.  Someone in their office tallies the pros and cons on those issues.  I'm glad that most of the time they vote along with my democratic views. I'm glad that they at least respond.  I have a Republican representative who rarely answers my emails and votes in opposition to the common sense ideals of most of us.  So welcome to Michigan - be glad Levin at least acknowledges your existence.

My rep is Upton.  When I wrote him with concerns about the pipe line, his people sent me a letter telling me how great the pipeline is for everyone.  I was not impressed.  I am happy to be in Michigan, though.

where are you?  We've got to work to get rid of these repubs running, or should I say, ruining our state.  We have so many beautiful places and wonderful people in this state - all we're missing is some sanity in Lansing.
