This ugly mindset, most prevalent among the GOP, that we as individuals owe nothing to anyone but ourselves in this world sickens me. What's more, those who have the gall to suggest such things and identify themselves as good Christians irks me even more.
Here is a typical post from one of the many self-centered that appears to be the primary message from the other side (from Time):
DavetheButcher:
What I don't get is how morons seem to think that this is all Republicans fault. Are they threatening a government shutdown? Yes. Does the government need to be shut down? Of course it does, needless laws, excessive executive orders designed to steal more freedoms from everyone in America, both parties having extremely long vacations and recesses while Americans are out of work and starve.
Free people need to stand up to the tyranny of this disgusting government. I am an American and I do not want Obamacare. It's that simple, we can't afford it as a nation. I pay for my own healthcare, I will not pay for anyone elses. Plain and simple. If anyone argues with that, then you are obviously not intelligent enough for me to care about your opinion anyway.
Hate to tell you, pal, but you're the one who needs an education.
Ignorance is such a pitiful thing, particularly among those who could benefit from the new healthcare system most but are too hateful, bigoted, simple-minded or brainwashed to know that the GOP is not their friend.
For those who are smart enough, the "survival of the fittest" meme is, and always, has been, so short-sighted. These people may very well get into an accident that leaves them at the mercy of the government for care. They may have a parent (like I do) who's funds run out because the system is not built to pay for homecare without someone going on Medicaid. They might lose a job and not be able to find another in more than a year, discover that their Cobra costs over $800 (or more) a month once it kicks in after they're let go, or that bankruptsy is just around the corner thanks to a procedure that should be affordable but isn't because costs have been allowed to rise without control.
I'd like to be able to slap some sense into someone like this but I know it's a fools errand. People will believe what they want to, even when the evidence doesn't support their beliefs. Egos will win out over common sense. It's only in their twilight years, if they can no longer afford their callous thinking, that opinions might change. Chances are, if they're as stupid as they sound today that's an unlikely scenario.
