Governor Chris Christie (R-Crispy Creme) has willingly let the media portray him as the 'moderate' Republican, an answer to the craziness that now is mainstream Republicanism.

However, his latest action betrays that premise.  From the President of the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In yet another egregious and outrageous action against survivors of law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency personnel killed in the line of duty, Governor Christie totally eliminated funding of the Survivor Tuition Benefits Program in the 2013-14 academic year.

Below is the history of the program and how the Governor's actions will impact survivors law enforcement officers and other other first responders throughout our State.

Fraternally yours,

Ed Brannigan

Don't be fooled by Chris Christie;  just because he can look Obama in the eye and not utter racist diatribes unlike his fellow Republicans doesn't mean he isn't a heartless jerk.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I'm not sure how conservative he is internally.  I think he's just all about himself and his political ambitions.  He killed the Hudson River tunnel because it made him look good to Tea Party idiots.  I think he, in his heart of hearts, supports gun control (always did as a prosecutor and when running against Corzine), but he knew the Republican primary would be impossible to win with an anti-gun vote on his resume, so he vetoed it.  He gave, in my estimation, an intentionally terrible speech at Romney's convention.  He hugged Obama.  The guy is just all about himself.  I think he has no real conviction about any issue.

NJ has one of the best public school systems in the country and Christie is working hard to privatize it. He's a  bully, who demeans & screams at teachers as if they were criminals.

He's slightly moderate in the culture war issues but that is a distraction of his deeply held right wing ideology. Remember he was one of Rove's bff attorney generals in the Justice Dept scandal.

fueled by corrupt NJ Democrats who are falling all over themselves to show how they can work with Christie and advance his agenda rather than supporting his Democratic opponent in the upcoming election.  As a NJ Democrat, I have never seen anything like it and it is disgusting.

my pay as a public worker continues to take serious hits due to Norcross and Sweeney's collusion with Christie. See Matt Taibbi's piece in RS to understand how this crisis was created and how the states stole from the pension funds andhow the hedge fund managers, some from Enron, plan to capitalize on the crisis. Disgusting.
