House Republicans don't just want to shut down government because Ted Cruz told them to, or because they really care about the deficit, or even because they want to nuke the United States government. They
also want to shut down the government
so your boss can take away your birth control:
House Republicans included a so-called "conscience clause" in the government funding bill in a plan they approved early Sunday. [...]
The measure would allow employers and insurers to opt out of providing health care services that they find morally or religiously objectionable.
So if your boss doesn't like birth control, he could exclude it from your coverage, a move that could cost women hundreds of dollars a year, while getting their bosses between their legs in truly icky fashion.
Didn't we already have this fight? Yes, yes we did, and back when allowing employers to pick and choose what health care their employees' insurance would cover was called the Blunt Amendment, 67 percent of people disagreed with it. Which makes sense when you consider that 99 percent of women use birth control. So naturally Republicans wanted to pick this proposal back up as part of a completely unrelated battle in which 69 percent of people think Republicans are acting like spoiled children. Talk about proving the point.
Stand with Daily Kos and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in denouncing Republicans who would completely shut down the government just to destroy Obamacare.
8:46 AM PT: Senate Democratic women—Barbara Boxer, Debbie Stabenow, and Mazie Hirono—are holding a press conference calling Republicans out for targeting preventive health care for women specifically. "We will stop them," Boxer said.
