The Constitution gives the President the ability to convene one or both Houses of Congress on extraordinary occasions. This should count.

Section. 3.

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

The full faith and credit of the country is at stake. I urge the President to recall all of Congress, have the doors sealed, and force them to remain there until this is resolved.

The government shutdown should not be a time that congressmen are allowed to go hobnobbing donor and fundraising - bring in the cots, and let's see how long they're willing to defend their actions.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

He's said it before - we cannot allow one group to hold the country hostage, while refusing to perform their sworn duties of government with the sole idea of destroying the system, and our national well-being as well.

    •  That's my thought. (0+ / 0-)

The Tea Party wing shouldn't get to use the shutdown as a free pass to play golf and have dinner with donors. The less insane wing of their party that are enabling them should be forced to either defend their actions or break and become rational.

  •  Actually - I think it best that he adjourn them (1+ / 0-)

Rather than call them together and stuff them in a room - adjourn them.  Execute a slew of appointments and then call them in to work (or what passes for work).

When he hears the words "we've run out of whiskey, and due to the shutdown, there's nobody to get some more".

    •  aseth - I think they are already in session (0+ / 0-)

Congress is in DC and in session, so having the President call them into session seems redundant. He can't "lock them in a room" even the President's powers are limited. If the shutdown continues he could require them to stay in session and not go home for the weekend, but he can't do anything while they are in DC conducting daily business.
