This government shutdown is simply the latest in a long list of travesties that have occurred because of Republican extremism and it's corresponding Democratic capitulation. Each has had a devastating effect on average people both in the United States and abroad. I am hopeful however that this final act of extremism will provide the impetus for the change that we had all hoped for in the 2008 election. We must seize this opportunity to take back the narrative which has been led by Republicans for the past 30 years. It is finally time to elect real progressives rather than centrists. We do not need politicians in office to continue with third way politics. We need FDRs. Progressive populist. People who will reverse the decades of escalating economic inequalities. People who will stop our endless war mongering. People who will halt the destruction of our planet in the name of corporate profits. A leveling of the playing field educationally, economically, and socially.

This is not an attack or defense of Barack Obama. Not everything has to be seen in that light. This is a statement of our political system from a bird's eye view. Please don't misinterpret this. Things need to change.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I would also hope that we would take a look at the 435 seats and allocate our resources alot better.  For example, the recent votes there were 2 Dems who sided with the GOP to shut em down.  It's high time we cut McIntyre and Matheson loose.  I'm tired of this bullshit about Matheson is the best we can do.  No he's not.  Maybe in fucking Utah he is but we can do ALOT better nationally.  We can do FAR better by cutting him loose and instead finding someone far more progressive in NY-02 or in the 2 GOP districts in South Florida.  Why are we dumping valuable resources into a district that is beat red when there are 100+ other GOP held districts where we would have a better shot at winning with a credible candidate and some serious financial support.  We have to have to stop looking at the tree that is Matheson and instead look at the forest that is the 434 other seats, many of which we could win and many of whom would not side with the GOP to shut em down.
